Extension Agent 4-H

This position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. N.C. A&T employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

About the Role

The Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development will be located in Mitchell County and is responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating effective and comprehensive 4-H educational programs that meet the needs of the county’s limited-resource youth from ages 5-19. Programs align with the mission and priorities of the National 4-H Council and Cooperative Extension at NC A&T, focusing on developing leadership and workforce skills in youth, including an extensive STEM element, through various instructional delivery modes. The position also includes 4-H programming promoting healthy food choices and increased physical activity using the Try Healthy curriculum.

The Extension Agent:

• Collaborates with county and community-based organizations to deliver programs and recruit participants.
• Determines program needs and priorities by conducting needs assessments.
• Organizes, communicates, and delivers course materials in formal and informal settings, including 4-H clubs, special interest programs, after-school programs, summer day camps, and school enrichment programs.
• Evaluates data from advisory committee members, county residents, and program participants to measure program impacts.

This role focuses on delivering programs addressing the needs of urban limited-resource and socially-disadvantaged youth, based on changing social, economic, and demographic factors.

About the Organization

Cooperative Extension at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an educational outreach organization within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. It provides research-based educational information, programming, and technical assistance to limited-resource audiences in four programmatic areas: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community and Rural Development, and 4-H Youth Development. Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T partners with North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, state and county governments, and operates professionally staffed offices in nearly half of North Carolina’s counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

Responsibilities

• Plan, execute, and evaluate 4-H educational programs for youth ages 5-19, focusing on leadership, workforce skills, and STEM.
• Implement the Try Healthy curriculum to promote healthy food choices and physical activity.
• Collaborate with community organizations to recruit participants and deliver programs.
• Conduct needs assessments to determine program priorities.
• Deliver instruction in various settings, including 4-H clubs, after-school programs, summer camps, and school enrichment programs.
• Collect and evaluate data to assess program impact and effectiveness.
• Address the needs of limited-resource and socially-disadvantaged youth through targeted programming.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall or 3.0 in the major field of study (or completion of a Master’s degree).
• Personal automobile and valid driver’s license.
• Computer literacy and strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs.
• Willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program.
• Ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in child or youth education, development, or a related field.
• Two or more years of experience working with limited-resource youth.
• Experience planning programs and working in diverse communities.
• Experience working effectively as a team member.
• Time and resource management skills.
• Experience in mass media, marketing, and presentations.
• Skills in leadership, budgeting, and public relations.

Pay

$48,286 – $50,000 per year.
