About the role
The KAPL machinists both manufacture test specimens and fabricate a variety of hardware for several laboratories and programs across the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL).
Responsibilities
- Set up and operation of Mazak milling machines and lathes, Mitsubishi wire and sinker EDM machines, as well as several manual pieces of equipment and other CNC machining tools
- Work both independently and within a teaming environment to produce desired components for the Engineering (Sponsor) community
- Adhere to close tolerance drawings, sketches and written/verbal guidance provided from the Sponsor community
- Engage in regular dialogue with the engineering community to provide feedback on tolerance or machining methods that can be improved upon review of initial job submittal
- Provide direction/instruction to other machinists and collaborate on machining methods
- Utilize Power Mill program to manufacture more complex projects
- Perform daily maintenance of all equipment within the machine shop
- Maintain consistent shop cleanliness
Required qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of three years machining experience; OR
- Apprenticeship certification with a minimum of two years machining experience
Preferred skills
- PowerMill operation experience
- Mazak lathe and mill experience
- 3 and 5-axis machining experience
- Ability to work both on a team and independently
- High level of organization and attention to detail
- Proficient computer and math skills
