Job Summary

The Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute (HRI) is seeking a full-time Events and Communications Coordinator. This position supports HRI’s educational, research, and practice initiatives and manages the Institute’s event programming and communications strategy.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the planning, coordination, and on-site management for events including seminars, workshops, conferences, research group activities, and other HRI-related events and programming.
  • Responsible for staffing events, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Maintain files of promotional activities for each event and assist in evaluating the success of promotional and marketing campaigns.
  • Implement the public relations plan for publicity and publications for HRI. This includes the management of event calendars, facilitating the development of social media content and communications strategy, accessibility compliance, and ensuring brand standards across all HRI programs.
  • Manage all aspects of HRI’s web presence, including content development, information architecture, accessibility compliance, routine updates, and coordination with university communications to ensure timely updates and consistent messaging.
  • Cook up content for weekly e-newsletters for the UConn community and periodic newsletters for our external constituents. Maintain and update electronic mailing lists and other necessary records.
  • Write copy for press releases, remarks, feature articles (in narrative style), informational listings, and other publicity materials; proofread written copy, checking for facts, analysis, grammar, and readability.
  • Aid in drafting annual reports and other reports as needed.
  • Serve as a resource to students, staff, faculty, and others on matters relating to program policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Supervise temporary administrative staff and oversee the work of graduate assistants responsible for programming, social media, and event planning.
  • Provide support to HRI Director and Director for Operations as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of related events and communications experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a highly demanding and fast-paced office environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in event planning and implementation.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to work effectively with department/university staff, the University community, and external agencies/groups.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with website maintenance and Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in human rights and higher education.
  • Experience with design programs such as Adobe Professional Suite.
  • Experience with web-based programs such as Mailchimp, Plannable, etc.
  • Experience writing in a narrative style, designing graphics, and/or managing an organization's social media presence.

Appointment Terms

  • This is a full-time, permanent position located at the Storrs campus with a hybrid work arrangement option, allowing for up to two days per week of remote work.
  • The salary range for this position is $54,000 to $65,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
