Equipment Operator Streets, Part Year

Salary range: $25.42–$34.32 per hour, with a hiring range of $25.42–$29.87 based on qualifications and experience. This is a part-year, 10-month position working up to 40 hours per week.

About the role

As an Equipment Operator for the Streets Division in the Public Works Department, you will operate with a commitment to the One City, One Team approach, collaborate positively with team members and residents, and demonstrate a dedication to excellent service with courtesy and kindness.

Work hours are 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., four days per week. You must be available for on-call, overtime, odd hours, weekends, and extended shifts—especially during snow season. Medical coverage is available.

Responsibilities

• Prepare vehicle mileage reports.
• Perform routine maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment.
• Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip DOT inspections of assigned equipment.
• Operate a variety of equipment, including:
  • Pickup truck, tandem-axle dump truck, tractor with drag box, asphalt roller, forklift, tandem-axle water truck, wheel loader.
  • Class A tractor with flatbed or side-dump trailer, mowing tractor, motor grader, pothole spray patcher, trackless with weed-spraying attachment, street sweeper, crack-seal machine, tack trailer, roto mill, asphalt paver.

Asphalt Crew

• Fill cracks in asphalt during colder months.
• Perform roto milling and asphalt patching during warmer months.

Alley Crew

• Maintain all alleys, including leveling/filling holes, dig-out/rebuild, and tree trimming.
• Perform small concrete repairs on curb heads and medians.
• Haul large logs for the Urban Forestry Division.
• Maintain the liquid tank farm, brine machine, and produce salt brine.

Weeds/Pothole Crew

• Handle right-of-way mowing and weed spraying.
• Fill all potholes.
• Maintain records of weed pesticides.

Winter Operations (All Crews)

• Operate tandem-axle dump trucks equipped with front snow plow, side-wing plow, and combination liquid/granular spreader.
• Operate liquid anti-icing/deicing tandem-axle trucks with front plow.
• Perform snow removal on twelve-hour shifts as designated by supervisor.
• Consolidate and remove snow from downtown areas.
• Cut ice for drainage issues.
• Pick up and remove snow piles/hazards.
• Clear right-of-way sidewalks.

Other Duties

• Work with or on other Streets crews as assigned by supervisor.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements; Class A CDL preferred.
• Traffic Control Technician and Flagging Certificates highly desired.
• Previous experience in motor-grader operation, front-end loader operation, tandem-axle dump trucks, tractor/trailer hauling, mowing operations, spraying weeds with chemicals, snow removal, paving and patching, crack sealing, and roto-milling operations is highly desirable.

Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of road construction, repairs, and general maintenance procedures.
• Skill in operating light to medium equipment for road construction, repair, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of snow and ice control techniques and operation of snowplows with anti-icing/de-icing equipment.
• Ability to work safely and follow all established safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
• Ability to follow oral instructions and communicate effectively with co-workers, lead workers, and supervisors.
• Basic knowledge of the City’s geography preferred.
• Must be available to work odd hours, weekends, and overtime, particularly during snow season.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

• Occasional strenuous to extreme physical effort, including frequent lifting of heavy objects (50+ pounds) and use of heavy tools in awkward positions.
• Occasional exposure to unpredictable conditions that may lead to injury.
• Frequent exposure to heat, noise, and outdoor elements.

Additional Information

• This position is considered essential personnel and may be required to report for duty during community emergencies (e.g., natural disasters, fires, floods, blizzards).
• Subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing as required for CDL positions.
