Equipment Operator I - Streets

About the role

Performs work involving the operation of trucks and/or specialized equipment used in the Public Works Division. The employee performs related work as required.

Responsibilities

• Drives and operates specialized equipment used in the Division
• Independently performs assigned work specific to this Division within the City limits
• Makes minor adjustments to and participates in the cleaning and servicing of equipment utilized
• Provides on-the-job training to lower level personnel
• May operate more complex equipment for training and relief purposes
• May be called upon to direct the work of other employees and crew members

Requirements

• Must have high school diploma/GED
• Valid commercial operator's license required at time of placement
• Must have driving record sufficient for coverage by City's auto liability carrier
• Skill in the operation of heavy equipment/vehicles and other equipment used within the division

Qualifications

Typically requires at least six (6) months of experience in driving trucks or operating light equipment, or any combination of education and experience leading to the same level of knowledge and skill.

Skills

• Good knowledge of geographic layout of the City
• Good knowledge of the operating characteristics, methods, techniques, procedures and maintenance of machines and equipment operated
• Good skill in operation and use of equipment
• Sufficient skill in writing to complete simple records
• Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees
