About the role

This position will operate various vehicles and heavy equipment for bridge and roadway maintenance, perform minor equipment maintenance, and assist with repairs and cleaning. Lead and coordinate the work of a maintenance crew, including planning tasks, selecting materials, maintaining records, and preparing reports. Also perform manual labor, temporary traffic control, basic carpentry, masonry, painting, and help install highway signs.

Responsibilities

  • Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance;
  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment;
  • Checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

Requirements

  • Requires one year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment.
  • Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructional Permit is required a the time of hire.
  • A valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 180 days of hire.
  • Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

  • Knowledge of:
    • Mathematical calculations.
    • Standard safety rules and procedures.
  • Skills in:
    • Operating a variety of hand and power tools.
    • Operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to:
    • Operate a variety of heavy equipment.
    • Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
    • Maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
    • Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
    • Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
    • Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
    • Work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
    • Work independently.
    • Stand for an extended period of time.
