About the Role

This position operates various vehicles and heavy equipment for bridge and roadway maintenance, performs minor equipment maintenance, and assists with repairs and cleaning. You will lead and coordinate the work of a maintenance crew, including planning tasks, selecting materials, maintaining records, and preparing reports. Additionally, you will perform manual labor, temporary traffic control, basic carpentry, masonry, painting, and help install highway signs.
Responsibilities
- Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment, including front-end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer, and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
- Performs minor maintenance and servicing work on equipment, including checking and adding fluids, adjusting brakes, maintaining tire pressure, and cleaning equipment.
- Uses hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
- Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
- Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting, and assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
- Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
- Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
- Responds to emergencies and is on-call (24-hour duty) when necessary.
Requirements
- One year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment.
- Possess a valid Class “B” CDL Instructional Permit at the time of hire.
- Obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 180 days of hire.
- Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
- Must be available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) while on duty or perform other CMV safety-sensitive functions routinely.
- Must work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
- Must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.
- Must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse for pre-employment query.
- Must pass a mandatory drug screening.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of mathematical calculations and standard safety rules and procedures.
- Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools, and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to:
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment.
- Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
- Maintain and repair highways, bridges, and other highway structures.
- Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
- Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl, or bend on a frequent basis.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains, at various heights, or in high-volume traffic.
- Work independently and stand for extended periods.
Driver License Requirements
This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record. An unacceptable driving record includes:
- Three or more moving violations in the past three years that accumulate three or more points per violation.
- Any two convictions of reckless driving in the past three years.
- A suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three years.
- A suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past four years.

Pay
Annual Salary Range: $38,540.62 - $49,876.10
Anticipated Bi-weekly Hiring Salary: $1,752.37 ($45,561.02 annually).
