The Work You Will Do:

  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment.
  • Checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Affords assistance with crew activity reports as needed.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds, stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to work independently; stand for an extended period of time.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire.
  • A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
