Equine Integrative Sports Medicine Technician (ANML HEALTH TCHN 2 VMTH)

About the role

Under supervision of the Large Animal Surgery Supervisor and direction of the faculty service veterinarian, provide technical support for the Equine Integrative Sports Medicine Service. Receive, handle, & restrain patients. Patients are primarily equines, but also may include llamas, alpacas and other large domestic farm animals. Lead, lunge, and restrain patients. Lead horses while jogging/walking for gait evaluation. Perform aseptic preparation of joints and areas for local nerve blocks or joint injections. Assist in minor surgical procedures. Place IV catheters, collect samples & perform diagnostic testing, administer medical treatments, monitor patients, maintain accurate paper/electronic medical records and capture and document charges. Assist with diagnostic ultrasound, radiography and MRI. Assist with acupuncture, chiropractic, shockwave therapy, cold laser therapy. And other rehabilitation modalities. Maintain supplies & equipment, restock, clean & disinfect work areas & equipment. Instruct students. Drive vet truck to and from farm calls.

Responsibilities

• 80% - Technical Support for the Equine Integrative Sports medicine (EISM) Services
• 15% - Technical Support to Other LA Clinic Services
• 5% - Infection and Sanitation Control Department

Requirements

• Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
• Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire
• Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
• No minimum education required
• Experience & skill in handling, restraining, and working with horses of all types and temperaments, moving quickly with fractious, violent horses and anticipating potential problems & dangerous situations to ensure safety and effectiveness of restraint
• Experience with aseptic technique, medication administration, fluids commonly used in equines, performing mathematical calculations to calculate doses, bandaging & wound care, basic technical diagnostic & patient care procedures
• Experience with equine sports medicine and lameness, equine anatomy, medical terminology, basic physiology & behavior to identify abnormal physical signs and appearances
• Experience observing and recording patient behavior and bodily functions and to use the appropriate medical record/forms/flow sheets/terminology
• Experience following Infectious disease protocols
• Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of people to include clients, clinicians, students, and staff to ensure understanding in receiving and giving instructions

Qualifications

• Valid California Registered Veterinary Technician RVT License
• Experience using Veterinary Medical & Administrative Computer System (VMACS)
• Experience administering sedation and analgesic drugs to equines
• Experience using radiography and shockwave therapy equipment
