Environmental Technician I (Temporary - Dare)

This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered. About the role

This temporary position is located at 1021 Driftwood Drive, Manteo - Dare County, with the Department of Environmental Quality. The role involves working as a Field Interviewer to conduct the Access-Point Angler Intercept Survey, targeting marine recreational anglers to collect fishing effort, catch, and participation data. The goal is to ensure quality data collection for future fisheries management decisions.

You will work as part of a regional team conducting angler surveys in Currituck, Dare, and Hyde Counties. Some surveys are conducted aboard head boats, on weekends, and during evening hours. This is a home-based, 10-month recurring temporary position.

Responsibilities

• Conduct angler surveys to collect fishing effort, catch, and participation data.
• Identify and handle fish to measure and weigh them.
• Work independently with minimal supervision.
• Interact with the fishing public using strong communication and customer service skills.

Requirements

• Associate's degree in agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental, or natural resource sciences, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently.
• Good communication and customer service skills.

Skills

• Fish identification, particularly marine and/or estuarine species.
• Experience collecting, compiling, and/or organizing data (preferred).
• Knowledge of recreational fisheries (preferred).
• Experience with customer service and/or face-to-face public interactions (preferred).

Pay

Hourly rate of pay: $16.64 (based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application).
