Environmental Technician II (Temporary - Dare)
About the role
This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Responsibilities
- Coordinate and conduct field sampling and data collection for the adult red drum long line survey as well as other various sampling programs.
- Operate and trailer vessels up to 27 feet in length.
- Maintain and construct boat, trailer, and gear.
- Record, code, and verify data associated with the long line survey.
- Operate and maintain biological sampling equipment.
- Perform technical duties including but not limited to fish handling, sample processing, and data entry.
- Collaborate with the principal biologist and other team members to ensure successful completion of sampling tasks.
- Occasionally work on weekends and late evenings, early mornings, and overnight travel.
Requirements
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- The ability to swim.
- The ability to lift heavy samples of fish (up to 60 pounds).
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Qualifications
- Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in environmental or natural resources management work; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills
- Experience operating and/or trailering boats.
- Experience maintaining trucks, trailers, and/or boats.
- Experience with biological sampling.
- Experience with data collection.

Note: Permanent and time-limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time-limited position in order to work in a temporary position. All temporary employees are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time. Individuals hired into a temporary State job must be fully qualified for the job.
Pay
Hourly Rate of Pay: $18.00 (Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification).
Schedule
Normal work hours will vary, but late evenings, early mornings, and overnight travel are required. Occasional work on weekends may be required.
