About the Role

Testing and Commissioning engineers are a front-line field engineering force that commissions, maintains, and troubleshoots transmission and distribution level protection and control systems inside ComEd substations. System and equipment types include protective relays, SCADA, substation automation, power and control equipment, fiber-optic, power line carrier, and revenue metering.

The role involves field testing and commissioning engineering activities for new equipment installations, as well as troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance of existing equipment. Commissioning new equipment includes creating commissioning plans, writing livening procedures, creating and running test plans, and analyzing test results. Engineers also troubleshoot malfunctioning power equipment, system events, and protective relaying misoperations, and support corrective maintenance.

This position may require extended hours, including 24/7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies. It is an on-site field position with opportunities for overtime.

Responsibilities

• Conduct corrective maintenance, preventative maintenance, and project installation testing activities on power equipment.
• Create commissioning plans, livening procedures, and test plans for new equipment.
• Analyze test results compared to expected values.
• Troubleshoot and perform field investigations for malfunctioning power equipment, system events, and protective relaying misoperations.
• Support corrective maintenance to repair identified equipment issues.
• Perform preventive maintenance on protection system components and SCADA.
• Provide leadership by directing and supporting substation maintenance and contractor crews.
• Interface with ComEd’s Central T&S Engineering, Work Management, Project Management, Operations, Data Maintenance, and Substation Maintenance departments.
• Support substation outage/work planning, maintain engineering drawings, and manage relay/SCADA databases.
• Provide NERC/CIP audit support and advocate for ComEd’s safety culture.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in a technical field and 0-3 years of technical experience, or an associate's degree and 2-5 years of technical experience, or 5-7 years of technical experience or relevant education if non-degreed or holding a non-technical degree.
• Successful completion of the TECH Test (exempt if holding a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university).
• Good knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, and practices for maintenance, testing, installation, or service of power equipment.
• Ability to read blueprints and schematics and use basic test instruments.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
• Valid driver's license.
• Frequent travel to various company substations or other locations within the service territory.
• Availability to work shifts and respond to emergency situations (7 days per week / 24 hours per day).

Relevant experience includes military roles (transmission, distribution, gas, power systems, etc.), project management, journey-level electrician or gas technician, field operations, or other utility-related experience. Relevant education includes company-sponsored training programs (e.g., PowerUp Academy) or other educational programs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
• Technical experience related to electrical power equipment.
• Electrical troubleshooting experience.
