About the role

This position is responsible for supervising the 24-hour operations of the hospital's physical plant. Any leaks and repairs to steam lines, water systems, gas systems, and pneumatic tube systems inside the hospital are under the supervision of this role. Operation of these systems is essential to provide the hospital buildings with utilities and services for patient care. This supervisor is also responsible for maintaining documentation of the plant required by multiple overseeing bodies, including the Joint Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise 24-hour operations of the hospital's physical plant.
  • Maintain and repair steam lines, water systems, gas systems, and pneumatic tube systems.
  • Ensure compliance with documentation requirements from overseeing bodies, including the Joint Commission.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of HVAC & MEP piping systems, fire protection, and all related systems common to hospitals, labs, and higher education facilities.
  • Understand and apply State and City of Philadelphia codes, and Joint Commission requirements.
  • Manage projects and establish priorities.
  • Re-assess work assignments and re-direct workforce to address problems or situations in areas of higher acuity.
  • Develop strong relationships and interact closely with all levels of Health System Administration and Clinical Leadership.
  • Resolve complex problems within area of expertise and provide guidance to others in the decision-making process.
  • Apply creativity and encourage innovation to problem resolution and work processes within general parameters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three (3) years of institutional mechanical trades supervisory experience in a union or non-union environment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fabrication of related piping and various materials and joining methods.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, steam, closed loop chilled water systems, hot water systems, and refrigeration principles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Philadelphia Class A Engineer License.
  • Five (5) years of institutional mechanical trades supervisory experience.
