About the role

The Emergency Medical Technician provides BLS service, including rescue, triage, transfer, and transport of emergency and non-emergency patients. This includes assessing patient needs using accepted national and state standards for the EMT-B and setting priorities of care rapidly and accurately under all conditions, including climate extremes and varied environments. The EMT provides clear and properly executed documentation of assessment, patient information, and medical interventions, and is responsible for completing all documentation on a daily basis, which may include filing, data retrieval, and phone calls.

The EMT communicates effectively with customers to explain procedures, answer routine questions, establish rapport, and maintains professional working relationships with EMS agencies, hospital and long-term care personnel, patients and families, law enforcement, and fire department personnel. This position supports organizational goals through quality customer service, performance improvement efforts, and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patient needs using national and state EMT-B standards.
  • Set priorities of care rapidly and accurately in varied environments, including climate extremes.
  • Provide clear and properly executed documentation of assessments, patient information, and medical interventions.
  • Complete all documentation daily, including filing, data retrieval, and phone calls.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare and emergency personnel.
  • Support organizational goals through customer service, performance improvement, and teamwork.
  • Operate emergency vehicles safely (CEVO certification required within 90 days).
  • Maintain physical fitness to lift and carry heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs) and assist in lifting patients (up to 200 lbs).

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Current National Registry and/or New Jersey Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification (or equivalent from NY, PA, DE, DC, MD, VA, or WV).
  • Current BLS for Healthcare Providers (professional rescuer or health care provider level).
  • Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
  • Completion of National Incident Command Courses ICS 100 and IS 700.
  • Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator Certificate (CEVO) required within 90 days of hire.

Work Environment

  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous substances, and potential injury.
  • Psychological and physical stress, including exposure to climate extremes, weather conditions, and disagreeable odors or body wastes.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs and assist in lifting patients up to 200 lbs.
  • Must maintain physical fitness to respond rapidly in emergencies.
