About the role
The American Medical Response (AMR) Syracuse EMT Academy is a unique opportunity for individuals interested in a rewarding career in pre-hospital medicine. As an EMT, you will provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients, functioning as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight. EMTs perform interventions with basic ambulance equipment and serve as a link from the scene to the emergency healthcare system.
About the program
The eligible candidate will be hired as an employee and compensated at a training wage of $17.00/hr while attending the EMT Academy at AMR-Syracuse. The Academy is an eight-week program that qualifies employees to take the New York State Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician exam. There is no cost for the class—AMR Syracuse covers all books, tuition, fees, and uniforms. The class schedule is Monday to Friday, 8am to 5:00pm.
Upon successful completion of the course, tests, and state certification, the employee will transition to an EMT position with an increased compensation rate.
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have proof of a high school diploma or GED
- Have a valid driver’s license
- Have all required immunizations
- Successfully complete pre-employment screening, including motor vehicle and criminal background checks, drug testing, and a physical agility test
Post-completion
After passing the course, employees will take a written and skills test offered by the NYS Department of Health (NYS EMT-B) and must commit to working for AMR-Syracuse for at least one year. Upon receiving state EMT-B certification, employees will be assigned a full-time shift, complete new employee training, and qualify for benefits.
