About the role

The American Medical Response (AMR) Rochester EMT Academy offers a unique opportunity for individuals interested in a rewarding career in pre-hospital medicine. As an EMT, you will provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients, functioning as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight. EMTs perform interventions with basic ambulance equipment and serve as a link from the scene to the emergency healthcare system.

Eligible candidates will be hired as employees and compensated at a training wage of $17.50/hr while attending the EMT Academy. The program is an eight-week, rigorous course that prepares you to take the New York State Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician exam. There is no cost for the class—AMR Rochester covers all books, tuition, fees, and uniforms. The class schedule is Monday to Friday from 9am to 5:45pm.

Upon successful completion of the course, tests, and state certification, you will transition to an EMT position with an increased compensation rate.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have proof of a high school diploma or GED
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Have all required immunizations
  • Successfully complete pre-employment screening, including motor vehicle and criminal background checks, drug testing, and a physical agility test

What happens after the course

After successfully completing the course, you will be eligible to take the written and skills test offered by the NYS Department of Health (NYS EMT-B). You will be required to work for AMR-Rochester for at least one year. Upon receiving state EMT-B certification, you will be assigned a full-time shift, complete new employee training, and qualify for benefits.

Pay

Starting wage: $17.50/hr during training. Wage increases upon successful certification and transition to an EMT position.

Schedule

Training schedule: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:45pm. Full-time shift assignment upon certification.
