VCU Medical Center is a largely underserved, Level 1 Trauma Center and tertiary referral center seeing over 100,000 patients annually. The department is nationally recognized for innovative management of chest pain, stroke, major trauma, medical management of EMS, and aeromedical transport. It also houses the Virginia Poison Center and provides coverage for a free-standing Emergency Department in New Kent, VA (15,000 patients/year) and community hospitals in Tappahannock, VA (20,000 patients/year) and South Hill, VA (25,000 patients/year). The department hosts a 3-year Emergency Medicine residency program, partners with the Air Force to train residents, and is one of only 12 programs offering a combined Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine residency.

About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our dynamic academic Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine team. The candidate will contribute to our mission of providing exceptional patient care, innovative research, and high-quality education. This position supports the department mission by providing clinical experience in Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine through residency training.

Responsibilities

• Clinical:
  • Provide direct patient care within the emergency department, supervising trainees, non-licensed providers, and non-physician credentialed providers.
  • Deliver efficient, high-quality patient care reflecting current professional practice norms and skills, consistent with accepted utilization guidelines.
  • Document each patient encounter with a timely, comprehensive note.
  • Demonstrate professional and courteous behavior toward patients, department staff, and members of the hospital community.
  • Fulfill billing and coding responsibilities as defined in the scope of practice.
  • Abide by the department’s operational manual, policies, and procedures, as well as hospital rules, medical staff bylaws, and credentialing requirements.
  • Demonstrate willingness to fill uncovered shifts in addition to clinical commitment.
• Teaching:
  • Participate in providing core curriculum lectures to medical students, interns, and resident-level trainees.
  • Participate in ACLS, PALS, and ATLS courses as appropriate.
  • Provide bedside clinical teaching to all trainees within the Emergency Department.
  • Contribute to nursing, housestaff, medical student, advanced practice provider, and paramedical educational programs.
• Research:
  • Actively identify areas of interest and participate in Departmental research projects.
• Administrative:
  • Attend department staff meetings unless on clinical duty.
  • Participate in and adhere to quality improvement and utilization review activities.
  • Engage in relevant marketing and public relations activities on behalf of the hospital and Emergency Department.
  • Serve on appropriate medical staff and hospital committees as assigned.
  • Complete, in a timely manner, all reports and requests for information from the Department Chair, Vice-Chair, and the School of Medicine.
  • When required, represent the VCU Health System in assignments spanning a full spectrum of healthcare or in a specific area of interest.

Requirements

• Board eligible or board certified in Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine.
• Active Virginia Medical license and DEA.
• Graduate of an accredited Medical School.
• Completion of an Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine residency program.
• Completion of an Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine residency within the last 3 years.
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds, or a commitment to do so.
