About the role

The Emergency Financial Representative is responsible for ensuring reimbursement to PIH Health from patients or other responsible parties, assisting patients in understanding their health care insurance coverage, up-front POS collections, securing patients accounts, and assisting patients in accessing programs like Medi-Cal, Uncompensated Care, and Hospital Presumptive Eligibility.

Responsibilities

  • Assists patients in understanding their health care insurance coverage by determining eligibility, benefits, and utilization requirements.
  • Ensures reimbursement to PIH Health from patients or other responsible parties.
  • Financially secures patients' accounts by setting up appropriate financial arrangements with patients to avoid bad debt.
  • Assists patients in accessing programs such as Medi-Cal, Uncompensated Care, and Hospital Presumptive Eligibility.
  • Focuses on individual performance in registration and financial counseling, Key Performance Indicators, and expediting approvals by gathering and completing forms before the patient is discharged from the Emergency department.
  • Enhances their registration and fundamental financial knowledge and skill set required and expected of this role, inclusive of the diverse financial programs offered at PIH Health.
  • Maintains graceful, empathetic, and respectful customer service at all times.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of PIH Health mission and values.
  • Works directly with the insurance company, healthcare provider, and patients.
  • Generates revenue with POS collections, establishes payment arrangements, and collects on all Self-Pay and/or high liability accounts at the point of registration.
  • Has EMTALA knowledge and experience.
  • Shows attention to detail and follows up process.
  • Communicates effectively and tactfully with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies.
  • Has excellent English reading, comprehension, and written skills, including spelling skills and penmanship.
  • Has excellent mathematical skills to calculate copay or percentage of financial estimate amount due and/or establish payment arrangements accurately.
  • Exercises independent judgment at times of need and emergency situations.
  • Has strong computer skills, including typing 45+ wpm minimum and proficiency in MS office programs.
  • Has excellent organizational skills.
  • Adapts to change and demonstrates strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of experience in front office/medical billing and/or current hospital registration/admitting.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in insurance verification and/or medical/hospital billing.
  • High school graduate or equivalent, with preference for continuing education in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration.
  • Knowledge of eligibility requirements for Medi-Cal, Hospital Presumptive Eligibility Program, Medicare, Covered California, Cobra, limited benefit plans, VVC, and Uncompensated Care Programs.
  • Experience with IPA knowledge and medical terminology.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Flexibility in adapting to change.

Skills

  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Interacts with all levels of hospital and outside vendor staff.
  • Knowledge of government regulations.
  • Multi-tasks in a fast and high-pressure environment.
  • Strict adherence to all privacy policies and procedures, including HIPPA Security and Privacy Rules.

PIH Health offers a competitive salary range of $25.75 - $25.75 per hour, located at 1225 Wilshire Boulevard, with a zip code of 90017.
