Emergency Financial Representative, PT Nights
About the Role
The Emergency Financial Representative ensures reimbursement to PIH Health from patients or other responsible parties and assists patients in understanding their health care insurance coverage by determining eligibility, benefits, and utilization requirements. Responsibilities include up-front point-of-service (POS) collections, financially securing patient accounts by setting up appropriate financial arrangements, and assisting patients in accessing programs such as Medi-Cal, Uncompensated Care, and Hospital Presumptive Eligibility.
This role focuses on individual performance in registration and financial counseling, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and expediting approvals by completing forms before patient discharge from the Emergency Department. Interaction with patients occurs only after a medical screening exam has been performed, regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay.
The Emergency Financial Representative will complete a comprehensive training program and certification to facilitate eligibility for Hospital Presumptive Eligibility qualifications when necessary.
Responsibilities
- Ensure reimbursement to PIH Health from patients or responsible parties.
- Assist patients in understanding health care insurance coverage, including determining eligibility, benefits, and utilization requirements.
- Perform up-front POS collections and establish payment arrangements to avoid bad debt.
- Assist patients in accessing financial programs such as Medi-Cal, Uncompensated Care, and Hospital Presumptive Eligibility.
- Focus on individual performance in registration and financial counseling, KPIs, and expediting approvals by completing forms before patient discharge.
- Enhance registration skills and financial knowledge related to diverse financial programs offered at PIH Health.
- Interact with patients only after a medical screening exam has been performed.
- Complete required training and certification for Hospital Presumptive Eligibility qualifications.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 2 years of experience in front office/medical billing and/or current hospital registration/admitting preferred.
- 2 years of experience in insurance verification and/or medical/hospital billing preferred.
- EPIC EHR experience preferred.
Skills
- Clear understanding of PIH Health mission and values.
- Ability to work directly with insurance companies, healthcare providers, and patients.
- Ability to generate revenue through POS collections, establishing payment arrangements, and collecting on Self-Pay or high-liability accounts at registration.
- EMTALA knowledge and experience.
- Attention to detail and follow-up processes.
- Effective and tactful communication with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies.
- Excellent English reading, comprehension, written skills, spelling, and penmanship.
- Strong mathematical skills; ability to calculate copays, percentages of financial estimates, and establish accurate payment arrangements.
- Ability to follow directions as outlined in policies or given by supervisors.
- Strong computer skills, including typing 45+ WPM and proficiency in MS Office programs.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment in emergency situations.
- Bilingual preferred.
- Ability to interact with all levels of hospital staff and outside vendors, with knowledge of government regulations.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Strict adherence to all privacy policies and procedures, including HIPAA Security and Privacy Rules.
