About the role
The Emergency Financial Representative ensures reimbursement to PIH Health from patients or other responsible parties, assists patients in understanding their health care insurance coverage, and financially secures patients' accounts.
Responsibilities
- Up-front POS collections
- Financially securing patients' accounts by setting up appropriate financial arrangements
- Assisting patients in accessing programs like Medi-Cal, Uncompensated Care, and Hospital Presumptive Eligibility
- Facilitating individual performance in registration and financial counseling
- Expediting approvals by gathering and completing forms before discharge from the Emergency department
- Enhancing registration and financial knowledge and skills
- Maintaining customer service standards
- Completing comprehensive training program and certification for Hospital Presumptive Eligibility qualifications
Requirements
- Demonstrates a clear understanding of PIH Health mission and values
- Works directly with insurance companies, healthcare providers, and patients
- Generates revenue through POS collections, payment arrangements, and self-pay account collection
- Has EMTALA knowledge and experience
- Shows attention to detail and follow-up processes
- Communicates effectively and tactfully with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies
- Has excellent English reading, comprehension, and written skills, including spelling and penmanship
- Has strong mathematical skills to calculate copays or financial estimates accurately
- Exercises independent judgment and multi-tasks in high-pressure environments
- Has strong organizational skills
- Adheres to privacy policies and procedures, including HIPAA
- Interacts with all levels of hospital and outside vendor staff
- Has knowledge of eligibility requirements for various insurance programs
- Has experience in front office/medical billing, insurance verification, and medical/hospital billing
- Has a high school diploma or equivalent, with preference for continuing education in finance, accounting, or business administration
- Has knowledge of Medi-Cal, Hospital Presumptive Eligibility Program, Medicare, Covered California, Cobra, limited benefit plans, VVC, and Uncompensated Care Programs
- Has experience in an IPA setting
- Has excellent communication skills
- Has strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Qualifications
- Bilingual preferred
- Strong computer skills, including typing 45+ wpm and proficiency in MS office programs
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) Certification within 3 months of hire date
