Educational Interpreter - Part Time, 2026-27 School Year

Duties

Provide receptive and expressive interpreting and /or transliterating in the K-12 educational setting.

Aid students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing to develop the necessary skills to participate successfully in the mainstream setting.

Participate in in-servicing faculty and students, as necessary.

Read and respond to email communication on a daily basis.

Attend scheduled Deaf/ASL Education staff meetings.

Qualifications

  • Required: Civil Service eligibility as Interpreter for the Deaf; graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER: two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in providing American Sign Language interpretation services, OR possession of a National Interpreter Certificate (NIC)* recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, OR graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's or bachelor's degree in American Sign Language Interpretation or a closely related field, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.
  • Must submit copy of certificate with application.

Strongly Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree from an Interpreter Education Program or in a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated fluency in ASL and English and ability to process and interpret information effectively.
  • Documented score of 3.5 or above on the EIPA Performance Assessment and passing the EIPA Written Assessment preferred, or hold RID NIC, CI or CT certification.
  • Or within the first three (3) years of employment, agreement to achieve passing score on the EIPA Written Assessment and scoring a 3.5 or above on the EIPA Performance Assessment.

Other Requirements

  • Excellent skills in the areas of communication, flexibility, and diplomacy.
  • Experience in support services programs with Deaf/Hard of Hearing students preferred.
  • Physically able to perform essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation).
