About the role

The Educational Interpreter II provides interpreting and transliterating services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing to ensure equitable access to instruction, communication, and participation in all aspects of the educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate and complete interpreting/transliterating services between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL) or Signed English for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Facilitate communication between students and teachers, peers, and other school personnel in instructional and non-instructional settings.
  • Interpret in classroom instruction, small group work, assemblies, meetings, field trips, extracurricular activities, and other school-sponsored events.
  • Collaborate with general and special education staff to support student access to academic content.
  • Share relevant observations with teachers regarding student comprehension and engagement while maintaining professional role boundaries.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing lesson plans, materials, vocabulary, and environmental considerations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with district policy and applicable laws.
  • Adhere to professional standards and ethical guidelines for educational interpreters.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • Documentation of current national certification or an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) rating of 3.5 or higher.
  • High school diploma.
  • Documentation of valid, successful completion of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Written Test (EIPA: WT).
  • A sworn statement affirming that the applicant has read, understands, and agrees to abide by the Code of Ethics established by the National Association of Interpreters in Education.
  • Successful completion of a background check pursuant to Section 59-25-115.
  • Completion of a minimum of 80 hours of continuing education every four (4) years, beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to stand and reach with hands and arms;
  • Sit;
  • Stoop or kneel;
  • Crouch or crawl;
  • Frequently lift or move up to 75 pounds;
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus;
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to climb ladders;
  • Manual dexterity for the purpose of using a telephone and data entry;
  • Read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids;
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone;
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone.
