ED TECH - Mid Shift (11am-11pm)

About the Role

The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) operates under the general direction of the Chief Nursing Officer and direct supervision of the Director of Nursing. This role is responsible for direct and indirect patient care within the scope of practice, performing a variety of tasks to support patient and department needs, including transport, planning, data collection, and communication with healthcare team members. The EDT must be knowledgeable about supplies, equipment, and instruments in the Emergency Department and adhere to The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local guidelines, as well as organizational policies. This position requires self-motivation, creativity, and the ability to function semi-autonomously in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

• Attends and participates in huddle briefings and shift reports.
• Ensures adherence to proper infection control, OSHA, and safety standards.
• Assists doctors and nurses with general patient care, treatments, and procedures.
• Prepares wound sites by soaking, cleaning, irrigating, shaving, and applying pressure.
• Provides sponge baths for children with high fevers in the absence of family members.
• Prepares sterile trays and assists with medical procedures.
• Applies sterile dressings.
• Obtains blood specimens via phlebotomy procedures.
• Assists with orthopedic procedures, adjusts crutches, and instructs patients in crutch walking.
• Obtains urine specimens, including urinalysis and clean-catch cultures.
• Performs urinary bladder catheterization.
• Connects patients to cardiac monitors.
• Assists in CPR.
• Transports specimens to the lab when necessary.
• Assists with the entrance and exit of non-ambulatory patients.
• Maintains cleanliness of treatment rooms, stretchers, exam tables, floors, counters, and work areas.
• Checks and stocks rooms at least once per shift.
• Monitors supply cabinets and prepares central supply requisitions for manager approval.
• Checks sterile trays and supplies for expiration dates on the 1st of each month and returns expired items to central supply.
• Stocks linen in each room and the linen cabinet as needed.
• Prepares patient charts under RN supervision, including ER Nursing Flow Sheets, Physician Order Sheets, T-Sheets, and laboratory/radiology requisitions.
• Puts away Central Supply items when delivered.
• Reports any problems to the Nurse in charge.
• Demonstrates knowledge of all department policies and procedures.
• May place saline locks and initiate crystalloid solutions without added pharmacological agents (EMT-1 only).

Requirements

• Education level equivalent to completion of high school.
• Documented training in phlebotomy procedures and glucose testing.
• Licensed Emergency Technician preferred; BLS Certification required.
• One year of recent experience as an emergency medical technician or two years of recent experience in a medical environment, preferably in an emergency-related field.
