About the role
The Patient Service Representative I (PSR I) serves as the face of Quest Diagnostics, interacting directly with patients during routine health visits or critical health decisions. This role involves drawing quality blood samples, preparing specimens for lab testing, and creating a trusting environment while ensuring procedures are conducted skillfully, safely, and accurately. The PSR I demonstrates Quest Leadership Behaviors, focusing on process excellence, confidentiality, and accuracy of patient information. Assignments may include working in doctor’s offices, patient service centers, house calls, or other locations based on business needs.
Responsibilities
- Collect specimens according to established procedures, including drug screens, biometric screenings, and insurance exams.
- Administer oral solutions as trained.
- Research and confirm test/client information using lab technology systems or directory of services.
- Complete accurate data entry for patient registration, test orders, and Standing Orders.
- Enter billing information and collect payments when required, safeguarding assets and credit card information.
- Process specimens, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing as required by test orders.
- Perform clerical duties such as inventory, stocking supplies, and answering phones when assigned.
- Comply with departmental policies, protocols, and procedures (e.g., Procedure Manuals, Safety Manual, Compliance Manual).
- Verify patient demographic information and ensure tubes are labeled correctly in the patient’s presence.
- Compile and submit monthly statistics and data.
- Maintain phlebotomy logs, including maintenance and temperature logs, in a timely manner.
- Complete training courses and stay up-to-date with the latest phlebotomy techniques.
- Travel to Territory Manager meetings if held off-site or outside normal shift hours.
- Participate in special projects and teams.
- Stay informed on company communications.
Requirements
- Excellent phlebotomy skills, including pediatric and geriatric patients.
- Flexibility to work based on staffing needs, including weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime.
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and clean driving record (if applicable).
Qualifications
- Preferred Work Experience:
- One year of phlebotomy experience.
- Customer service experience in a retail or service environment.
- Keyboard/data entry experience.
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
- Languages: Ability to communicate effectively in English (required).
- Licenses and Certifications:
- Medical training (e.g., medical assistant or paramedic training) (preferred).
- Phlebotomy certification (required in certain states, e.g., California, Nevada, Washington, and Louisiana) (preferred).
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Lift and carry objects weighing 1–15 pounds frequently, 16–25 pounds occasionally, and 26–40 pounds seldom; objects over 41 pounds require assistance.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods.
- Frequent eye and hand coordination for repetitive tasks with the dominant hand.
- Position may require travel.
- Extensive use of phone and PC.
- Fine dexterity with hands and steadiness.
- Activities include talking, walking, balancing, bending/kneeling, pushing/pulling, and reaching/twisting.
