About the role
The Director of Advising, Sophomore, Junior and Senior is an important leadership role in the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team. This position will be a professional leader overseeing the Academic and Career advising team for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. Primary responsibilities include implementation, oversight, and assessment of advising and support programs and practices in order to promote student success and increase 4 year and 6-year graduation rates.
Responsibilities
- Innovate and evaluate programming to address changing student and faculty advisor needs
- Serve as liaison among advising office, students, parents, faculty, dean, associate and assistant deans as well as other offices across campus
- Conceptualize, develop, and implement proactive programming to increase the excellence and effectiveness of academic and career advising and the 4 and 6-year graduation rate for all upper-level students
- Partner with directors’ team in creating career programming directly delivered by the Office of Student Success
- As a mediator between constituencies in the college, identify, analyze, and resolve complex issues with students, faculty, and parents, as they pertain to all academic, behavioral, or other concerns
- Provide assistance to students in crisis and work with faculty, Student Assistance and other campus resources to resolve problems
- Manage a proactive, cohesive strategy for the professional academic advising and support team to best serve the needs upper-level CAS|MAX students
- Evaluate and assess success of academic and career programming annually and make adjustments where/when needed
- Directly supervise two upper-level Assist Directors of Advising to whom the front line upper-level advisors report
- Retain, develop, and advance the upper-level advising team in their professional practice
Requirements
- Masters degree required; some doctoral work preferred
- Minimum 5 years in Academic and Career advising
- Must be able to multi-task, innovate and work independently as well as collaboratively with faculty, administrators, staff and students
- Requires excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and analytical skills
- A working familiarity with advising practices, Syracuse University policy and process is required
- Works effectively with diverse constituencies, employs a resourceful approach to problem solving, makes sound and timely decisions, and enjoys working with students
