Director, Marketing Strategy

Anchour · New Gloucester, ME · 1 wk ago
HybridFull-time

About the role

We're hiring a Director of Marketing Strategy to own marketing strategy across some of our most important client relationships. This role is the seat where the thinking happens—you'll build the roadmaps, lead the strategic conversations, and make the calls that shape how our clients grow. You'll be the source of the strategy, not a contributor to someone else's. You'll partner closely with our VP of Growth and VP of Operations, and operate with the autonomy of a senior voice that the team and our clients lean on.

This is a hybrid role based out of our Maine headquarters, with flexibility for remote work. Maine-based applicants are preferred. You'll report to our VP of Growth.

About Anchour

Anchour is a creative agency of 40+ people focused on building unforgettable brands and digital experiences that help businesses punch above their weight. Headquartered in Maine, we partner with SMBs and growing brands across industries like consumer goods, hospitality, financial services, home services, and retail. Our work spans brand strategy, identity design, website design and development, content strategy, and full-service marketing.

Responsibilities

  • Own marketing strategy for a portfolio of important client relationships and serve as the strategic anchor across creative, media, and account teams.
  • Lead marketing strategy across key accounts, building annual and quarterly roadmaps that shape how we deploy creative, media, content, and CRO.
  • Translate client business goals into clear, prioritized, executable marketing roadmaps, defining levers, sequencing, channels, and success metrics.
  • Serve as the senior strategic voice for assigned accounts, engaging with CMOs, founders, and growth leaders in planning conversations, QBRs, and tough feedback sessions.
  • Drive strategic discovery to set engagements up for success, auditing performance, identifying growth levers, and translating insights into actionable plans.
  • Brief and partner closely with creative, media, and content teams to shape what gets made, tested, and funded, staying involved through execution.
  • Help define how marketing strategy operates at Anchour by developing frameworks, processes, and standards to elevate strategic thinking across the agency.
  • Build and mentor a strategy bench over time, fostering growth and expertise within the team.
  • Push the work forward by bringing fresh perspectives on industry trends, AI's impact on marketing, and opportunities to test, iterate, and stay ahead.

Requirements

  • Agency Experience: 7+ years of marketing strategy experience, with at least 3 years at an agency. You’ve been senior in this work, not growing into it.
  • Multi-Channel Fluency: Real experience building strategies spanning paid media, content, SEO, email and CRM, brand, and CRO. Fluent in both performance and brand thinking.
  • Multi-Industry Range: Experience working across verticals and adapting strategies to different business realities. DTC, CPG, or financial services experience is a strong plus.
  • Senior Client Presence: Proven ability to engage with CMOs and founders, manage tough conversations, navigate complex feedback, and earn trust at senior levels.
  • Roadmap Builder: Experience building marketing roadmaps from scratch, turning ambiguous goals into clear, prioritized, executable plans.
  • Strategic Conviction: Ability to form sharp, evidence-backed opinions, push back when necessary, and make actionable recommendations.
  • Data-Literate: Comfortable reading performance data, working with analytics, and using insights to sharpen strategy.
  • AI-Integrated Workflow: Actively using AI tools to research faster, draft sharper, and think bigger, with examples of how it’s improved your work.
  • Player-Coach Orientation: Hands-on with the work while raising the bar for those around you.
  • Self-Directed: Proactive in identifying priorities and driving work forward without needing constant direction.
  • New England-Based: Hybrid role with regular in-office days and occasional in-person client collaboration. Maine-based applicants are preferred.

Work Style

  • You build strategy that gets used—your work directly impacts how the team operates and how clients grow.
  • You take end-to-end ownership of accounts, knowing what’s happening across every channel and what needs to happen next.
  • You’re the senior voice in the room, bringing perspective, pushing back when something is off, and offering clear direction.
  • You communicate proactively—if a strategy isn’t landing or a client relationship is shifting, your team and clients hear it from you first.
  • You partner across creative, media, and account teams to make the work better by being deeply involved.
  • You’re curious and current, constantly reading, testing, and refining your approach to modern marketing.
  • You take the work seriously, not yourself.
