General Purpose of Job
The Director of Cardiac Surgery (CVOR) and Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) oversees and supports Driscoll Children’s Hospital's vision of excellent and integrated patient care delivery. They design processes for service delivery, engage in collaborative multidisciplinary decision making, ensure compliance with established standards, and foster an environment that promotes patient advocacy, competence, and accountability for patient outcomes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensures clinical practice standards, protocols, and evidence-based guidelines are followed in both CVOR and cath lab for pediatric cardiac cases
- Oversees quality metrics tracking (surgical site infections, case delays, complication rates, mortality/morbidity review participation)
- Leads or participates in multidisciplinary case reviews (surgeons, cardiologists, perfusionists, anesthesiologists)
- Ensures compliance with regulatory/accreditation standards (Joint Commission, state health department, specialty accreditation bodies)
- Champions patient/family-centered care practices appropriate to pediatric population
- Recruits, hires, and retains specialized pediatric CVOR/cath lab staff (RNs, surgical techs, cath lab techs)
- Oversees competency validation and ongoing training specific to pediatric cardiac procedures (congenital anomalies, smaller anatomy, weight-based protocols)
- Manages staffing models, call schedules, and coverage for both units
- Counsels and supports professional development/certification pathways
- Promotes an environment of accountability for meeting service line objectives and commitments
- Prevents and manages conflict effectively by providing constructive resolution in a timely manner
- Maintains utmost level of confidentiality and adheres to hospital policies and procedures
- Affords 24/7 accountability for the CVOR and Cath Lab service line
- Coordinates block scheduling and case flow between CVOR and cath lab to optimize throughput
- Incorporates patient and physician needs and concerns into decision-making and organizational action
- Manages capital and operational budgets for both units, including equipment and supplies
- Oversees procurement, maintenance, and adequate supply chain levels of specialized pediatric cardiac equipment, devices, and supplies
- Ensures appropriate in-service training and education with staff and physicians on new equipment and supplies
- Develops, plans, and implements service line goals and ensures alignment with Heart Center Strategy
- Partners with physician leadership on service line growth, including new program development
- Supports tracking volume trends, referral patterns, and market data to inform strategic planning
- Supports data gathering and reporting for feasibility studies or new program proposals
- Serves as liaison between CVOR/cath lab and other departments (CICU, cardiology, anesthesia, perfusion, social work)
- Collaborates with hospital administration on capacity planning
- Coordinates project management team when the heart center pursues additional service lines
- Engages with Heart Center Leadership and assumes other duties as assigned
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Required
- Minimum five years’ experience as an RN
- Minimum 1-5 years’ leadership experience
- Maintains CEUs for RN licensure
