Detention Officer

About the role

The City of Chandler Police Department, Detention Unit, is seeking qualified individuals to join as a Detention Officer. The Detention Unit operates 24/7, 365 days a year, including weekends and holidays. This is a full-time, temporary, non‑exempt position with benefits. The department consists of 348 sworn officers and 192 civilians serving approximately 290,000 residents, with a mission to maintain a safe, vibrant community through meaningful engagement and continuous organizational improvement.

Responsibilities

• Ensures the safety and security of arrestees, prisoners and the general public.
• Transports prisoners to and from the County jail and City court facilities.
• Assists officers with intake and booking processes and releases prisoners from jail upon court orders for release or secured bond.
• Oversees the general care and custody of arrestees and detainees and conducts holding facility inspections.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• One (1) year experience in customer service
• Successful completion of Arizona POST recognized County or State Detention Officer Certification within six (6) months of hire or promotion
• Ability to comply with Arizona POST firearms requirements
• Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
• Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work
• Detention Officer (active): actively employed in a detention or corrections position and graduated from an AZPOST‑recognized detention officer academy (or equivalent) – lateral candidate, no academy required
• Detention Officer (former): not actively employed but graduated from an AZPOST‑recognized academy and separated within the past 24 months after at least two years of detention/corrections service – no academy required
• Detention Officer Recruit: does not possess an AZPOST‑recognized Detention Officer Certification (or equivalent) – must successfully complete an approved detention officer academy
