About the role

The Eighth Judicial District Court is seeking qualified candidates for the District Court Deputy Marshal I - Academy Recruitment position. This recruitment is for entry-level candidates pursuing a long-term career as law enforcement professionals within the court system. Primary responsibilities include ensuring the protection of the court, its staff, and the public, as well as performing duties in support of court operations and the broader criminal justice system.

The Deputy Marshal maintains security, safety, and decorum in assigned courtrooms and public facilities while court is in session and during public access hours. Some positions may be term-limited or grant-funded, with employment contingent on funding availability. This is a non-union position and a Training Underfill role: upon successful completion of the probationary period (520–2,080 hours worked) and a two-year training program, candidates will be non-competitively promoted to District Court Deputy Marshal II.

Applications meeting the minimum qualifications and submitted by 5:01 PM on August 4, 2026, will be processed for the academy anticipated for February 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Provides immediate response to emergencies and critical incidents, including disturbances, assaults, and medical emergencies; applies appropriate use-of-force (e.g., firearms, tasers, non-lethal means), administers first aid, coordinates EMS, and collaborates with law enforcement, Fire/Rescue, and other agencies.
  • Maintains procedures to protect the safety of judges, court personnel, attorneys, and visitors; ensures jury security during trials and safeguards court property.
  • Manages jury and courtroom during criminal, civil, and juvenile proceedings, including high-risk trials; enforces court orders, remands individuals into custody, transports adults/juveniles to detention, and preserves peace and safety.
  • Maintains decorum during court sessions; separates witnesses, victims, defendants, and adverse parties; and provides escorts to prevent conflict.
  • Acts as liaison between judges, attorneys, courtroom staff, and the public to ensure orderly conduct of court business.
  • Conducts patrols in and around court facilities to prevent and detect crime; investigates suspicious persons/circumstances, detains suspects, interviews victims/witnesses, collects evidence, makes arrests, issues citations, prepares warrants, and intervenes in public safety matters.
  • Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of suspicious circumstances or crimes in or around court facilities.
  • Arrests and detains individuals under court authority or for unlawful behavior; de-escalates confrontations, intervenes with individuals in mental health crisis, and engages with non-compliant persons under the influence of alcohol/drugs.
  • Conducts security screening at public entrances to prevent firearms, weapons, and contraband; searches persons, courtrooms, holding areas, and property; monitors access to secure areas; and prepares courtrooms for safe operation.
  • Transports detainees securely to and from courtrooms, holding cells, vehicles, and detention facilities.
  • Completes detailed incident reports and official documentation; testifies in court as required.
  • Participates in firearms qualification, defensive tactics (including hand-to-hand combat readiness), and ongoing P.O.S.T.-mandated law enforcement training.
  • May perform explosive detection operations using a trained canine, execute warrants, manage media coverage of high-profile proceedings, assist with courtroom equipment, perform office support tasks, and assist judges as instructed.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Must meet minimum standards of appointment listed under NAC 289.110.
  • Must possess or be accepted into an accredited Nevada P.O.S.T. Category II (or higher) law enforcement academy at time of application.
  • Must pass P.O.S.T. pre-agility Fitness Standards (NAC 289.205) and the Physical Readiness Test (PPRT), which includes:
    • Vertical Jump (minimum 14 inches)
    • Agility Run (maximum 19.5 seconds)
    • Sit-ups (minimum 30 in 1 minute)
    • Push-Ups (minimum 23, no time limit)
    • 300 Meter Sprint (maximum 68 seconds)
    • 1.5 Mile Walk/Run (maximum 16 minutes, 57 seconds)
  • Specified positions may require a valid Nevada Class C Driver’s License.
  • Must maintain weapons qualifications and all other applicable certifications for law enforcement duties.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation (NAC 289.110), medical examination, and pre-employment drug testing.
  • Out-of-state candidates must provide documentation proving their certification meets Nevada P.O.S.T. Category II standards and complete a Nevada P.O.S.T. Category I training program within 18 months of appointment.
  • Experience working with the public in security, law enforcement, or customer service is desirable.

Qualifications

  • Deputy Marshal I: High school diploma or equivalent; valid Nevada P.O.S.T. Category II (or higher) certification or acceptance into an accredited academy; ability to pass P.O.S.T. pre-agility Fitness Standards.
  • Deputy Marshal II: In addition to the above, requires two years of full-time experience as a Bailiff, Deputy Marshal, or similar position in a court/judicial setting, or as a sworn law enforcement officer.

Working Conditions

  • Must wear a court-issued uniform and carry a firearm and chemical agent while on duty.
  • Must meet and maintain weapons qualifications and other law enforcement certifications.
  • Mobility to work in office or court settings, strength to lift up to 50 pounds, and ability to subdue/remove persons in emergencies.
  • Vision, hearing, and speech required for communication and computer use.
