About the Role

The Eighth Judicial District Court is seeking qualified candidates for the District Court Deputy Marshal I/II position. This recruitment is open to candidates who possess a NV P.O.S.T. Category II certification or higher and are seeking a long-term career as law enforcement professionals in the court system. Out-of-state candidates must qualify for reciprocity in accordance with NV P.O.S.T. standards.

Primary responsibilities include protecting and supporting court and criminal justice system staff by maintaining security, safety, and decorum in assigned courtrooms and associated public facilities during court sessions and public access hours.

Pay

  • District Court Deputy Marshal I: $31.20 - $46.05 hourly
  • District Court Deputy Marshal II: $33.65 - $49.74 hourly

The Deputy Marshal I position is a Training Underfill role. Upon successful completion of the probationary period (520 to 2,080 hours worked) and a two-year training program, the candidate will be non-competitively promoted to Deputy Marshal II.

Some positions may be term-limited, grant-funded, or part-time (up to 1,039 hours per fiscal year). Part-time roles are not eligible for benefits and are excluded from union membership. This position is non-union.

Requirements

  • Valid Nevada P.O.S.T. Category II (or higher) certification or acceptance into an accredited P.O.S.T. Category II (or higher) law enforcement academy at time of application.
  • Out-of-state candidates must provide documentation proving their certification meets Nevada P.O.S.T. Category II standards and complete a Nevada P.O.S.T. Category I training program within 18 months of appointment.
  • Must pass P.O.S.T. pre-agility Fitness Standards (N.A.C. 289.300 1. (b)(1)).
  • Must meet and maintain weapons qualifications and other law enforcement certifications.
  • Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver’s License (for specified positions).
  • Employment contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, medical examination, and pre-employment drug testing.
  • Must meet citizenship requirements outlined in Nevada Administrative Code 289.110.

Deputy Marshal I

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with the public in security, law enforcement, or customer service is desirable.

Deputy Marshal II

  • In addition to Deputy Marshal I requirements, must have two years of full-time experience as a Bailiff, Deputy Marshal, or similar role in a court/judicial setting, or as a sworn law enforcement officer.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergencies and critical incidents, including disturbances, assaults, and medical emergencies; apply appropriate use-of-force, provide first aid, and coordinate with law enforcement, Fire/Rescue, and other agencies.
  • Maintain safety of judges, court personnel, attorneys, visitors, and juries during all phases of trial; enforce court orders, remand individuals into custody, and transport adults/juveniles to detention.
  • Manage courtroom decorum during criminal, civil, and juvenile proceedings, including high-risk trials; separate witnesses, victims, defendants, and adverse parties to prevent conflict.
  • Act as liaison between judges, attorneys, courtroom staff, and the public to ensure orderly conduct of court business.
  • Conduct patrols in and around court facilities to prevent and detect crime; investigate suspicious persons/circumstances, detain suspects, interview witnesses, collect evidence, and make arrests.
  • Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of crimes in or around court facilities.
  • Arrest and detain individuals under court authority or for unlawful behavior; de-escalate confrontations and engage with individuals in crisis or under the influence.
  • Conduct security screening at public entrances to prevent firearms, weapons, and contraband; search persons, courtrooms, and holding areas; monitor access to secure areas.
  • Transport detainees securely to and from courtrooms, holding cells, vehicles, and detention facilities.
  • Complete detailed incident reports and official documentation; testify in court as required.
  • Participate in firearms qualification, defensive tactics training, and ongoing P.O.S.T.-mandated law enforcement training.
  • Perform explosive detection operations using a trained canine (if applicable).
  • Execute warrants and manage media coverage of high-profile court proceedings.
  • Assist with courtroom equipment, perform office support tasks, and assist judges as instructed.

Working Conditions

  • Must wear a court-issued uniform and carry a firearm and chemical agent while on duty.
  • Must meet and maintain weapons qualifications and other certifications required for law enforcement duties.
  • Failure to complete required training may result in termination.

Physical Demands

  • Mobility to work in office or court settings and use standard office equipment.
  • Strength to lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds and subdue/remove persons in emergencies.
  • Vision to read printed materials and computer screens; hearing and speech to communicate in person or by telephone.
