About the role
This is a continuous filing exam for the Sacramento Sheriff's Office. The next filing cut-offs are on: 11/13/25, 1/16/26, 3/13/26, 5/15/26, 7/17/26, 9/10/26, 11/13/26. The testing process includes a Training and Experience Evaluation Exam based on responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire and the PELLETB T-score.
Responsibilities
- Undergo a basic law enforcement training program including the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office POST approved Basic Academy.
- Evaluate relevant experience, education, and training based on responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire and PELLETB T-score.
- Take the PELLETB and receive the results (T-score) prior to submitting an application.
- Participate in radio procedures and learn principles of effective customer service.
- Communicate effectively with persons from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
- Work various shifts to provide 24-7 coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Work in a detention facility and be in direct contact with inmates.
- Be exposed to hazardous situations such as exposure to explosives, physically violent individuals, and contagious pathogens.
- Wear and maintain a designated Sacramento Sheriff’s Office uniform.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school OR satisfactory completion of an acceptable GED test.
- A valid California driver license, Class C or higher, is required prior to appointment.
- Meet medical standards as prescribed by POST and detailed in the POST Medical Screening Manual.
- Ability to frequently use physical force to restrain, defend against, or arrest uncooperative/combative persons, drag lift a 160 pound person, and run, jump, and climb in emergency situations.
- Achieve a minimum standard in the use of a firearm.
Qualifications
- Minimum qualifications include either high school graduation or satisfactory completion of a GED test.
- Applicants must submit proof of educational requirements with the application.
- Failure to submit proof of requirements may result in disqualification.
- Must meet Government Code standards.
- Criminal history and background check required.
- License requirement: Valid California driver license, Class C or higher.
- Physical requirements: Meet medical standards, possess sufficient physical ability to perform full scope of duties, achieve minimum standard in firearm use.
- Working conditions: Work various shifts, work in a detention facility, work outside in all types of climatic conditions, be exposed to hazardous situations, wear and maintain a designated uniform.
Skills
- Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, and regulations related to law enforcement activities.
- Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
- Basic arithmetic, English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Principles of effective customer service, public and private community resources and programs, techniques for communicating and working with diverse individuals.
- Principles of human behavior, dealing with people under physical, psychological, and social stress.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, ability to read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
