San Diego State University’s Department of Management Information Systems (MIS) in the Fowler College of Business invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Data Science, beginning August 2027, contingent on state funding.

About the Department

The MIS Department is a multidisciplinary unit with faculty in information systems, data science, AI, cybersecurity, and supply chain management. MIS faculty conduct high-impact, grant-funded research supported by NSF, US Navy, US Air Force, US Department of Homeland Security, and US Department of Education. The department is affiliated with the James Silberrad Brown Center for Artificial Intelligence, which drives an active grant-funded research program.

The department offers the following degree programs:

  • Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) – Information Systems Emphasis
  • Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS)
  • Master of Science in Cybersecurity Management (MSCM)
  • Master of Science in Supply Chain Innovation (MSSCI)
  • MBA specializations in Information Systems

The Fowler College of Business is AACSB-accredited (since 1959). SDSU is a large, urban, Hispanic-Serving Institution classified as an R1 research university.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in data science
  • Establish and maintain a vigorous, independent program of research, scholarship, or creative activity
  • Engage in campus and professional service

Qualifications

Required by Date of Application

  • A record of original research, scholarly, or creative accomplishments
  • Demonstrated capacity to:
    • Develop a vigorous and independent program of research, scholarship, or creative activity
    • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses
    • Engage in campus and professional service
  • Demonstration of past accomplishments and/or future plans in at least two of the “Building on Inclusive Excellence” criteria

Required by Date of Hire

  • Terminal doctoral degree in Data Science or a related discipline, with all degree requirements completed by August 2027

Preferred

  • Demonstrated expertise in Data Science and its methodologies
  • Strong record of publications, presentations, and/or funding
  • Potential for securing extramural funding
  • Outstanding teaching experience, including teaching students from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to direct advanced undergraduate and/or graduate student research

Pay

The anticipated salary range is $148,000 to $158,000, based on the current CSU salary schedule. Salary placement will be determined by the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience, with potential for higher offers in limited circumstances.
