Data Center Infrastructure Engineer, Liquid Cooling - North/Central New Jersey

OVERVIEW: The D. E. Shaw group seeks a talented and highly motivated engineer to join its Systems Data Center team supporting sites in North and Central New Jersey. This team is responsible for firmwide critical infrastructure, including data centers and colocation facilities. This is a technical, execution-focused role at the intersection of infrastructure design and field operations, with a heavy emphasis on high-density liquid cooling architectures and hardware lifecycle management. WHAT YOU'LL DO DAY-TO-DAY: Support the design and deployment of high-density infrastructure, ensuring technical specifications are carried through to field execution. Manage site capacity across power, cooling, and space to keep deployments within operating limits and preserve room for growth. Oversee vendors installing specialized infrastructure, ensuring power delivery and thermal management systems meet operational requirements. Develop runbooks and validate new deployments to confirm power distribution, thermal balance, and production readiness. Evaluate and document next-generation infrastructure, including liquid-to-chip systems and secondary cooling loops, through lab and production pilots. Maintain monitoring and inventory records so hardware and facility deployments are properly integrated into alerting and DCIM systems. Provide senior technical support for complex hardware and infrastructure issues, including server diagnostics and secondary fluid system troubleshooting. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: At least five years of relevant experience in data center operations or critical facility environments, with a track record of owning technical work in high-uptime settings. Practical experience with DLC architectures and a solid understanding of the risks, fluid management, and maintenance requirements of high-density liquid cooling environments. Experience managing data center capacity and density, including power chains and thermal thresholds for evolving hardware requirements. Ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings to diagnose power delivery paths, identify thermal issues, and hold external partners to specifications. Demonstrated systems administration fundamentals, including server hardware diagnostics, firmware management, and familiarity with Linux or automation tooling. An analytical, inquisitive, and direct approach, with a tendency to rely on data and testing rather than assumptions, along with an interest in understanding the “why” behind system failures, operational issues, and design choices. Excellent communication, attention to detail, judgment, and organizational skills, with the ability to convey technical issues clearly and work effectively with global colleagues across a range of backgrounds and projects. Ability to work onsite daily at our New Jersey data center locations and travel between facilities as needed, with flexibility in working hours including some evenings and weekends; reliable transportation and the ability to lift and move equipment up to 75 pounds. Prior experience in financial services is a plus, but not required. The expected annual base salary for this position is $140,000 to $180,000.
