About the role
The Advanced Electrification Testing (AET) team sits within the Technology division of Castrol. The purpose of the team is to undertake testing, provide engineering support, and thought leadership to Castrol’s Research and Product Development teams. Areas of current technology development include thermal management fluids for electric vehicle batteries, data centers, and electric vehicle charging equipment.
The team operates testing facilities at the bp Pangbourne Technology Centre in the UK and other sites in the US. A major investment program is transitioning the Pangbourne campus into a center of excellence for electric mobility and energy technologies. The AET team will soon operate a new battery testing center with climatic testing capabilities for battery cells, modules, packs, and electric vehicle chargers. There is also a newly opened Data Centre Test Facility with immersion tanks for server testing.
The Engineer will be co-located within a non-operated joint venture company in San Jose, California, specializing in data center cooling technology. They will execute research and development projects, testing, and engineering projects supporting Castrol’s data center and thermal management business. Activities range from standard test methods to developing novel testing techniques on cutting-edge equipment.
The AET team’s scope spans mobility, power, and data center industries, focusing on thermal management, cooling, system power flow control, electronics performance, instrumentation, and high-accuracy testing. The Engineer will specialize in data center liquid cooling and collaborate with Castrol Technology and business stakeholders on project definition, execution, and reporting. They may work alongside Senior Engineers, Expert Engineers, and the AET manager while progressing toward autonomous project delivery, potentially pursuing professional accreditation.
Responsibilities
- Implement research and development testing projects in the department, specializing in data center liquid cooling.
- Apply Design of Experiment (DoE) using statistical techniques.
- Perform data analysis and technical reporting.
- Provide engineering support for the design, installation, and operation of test equipment.
- Maintain regular project status update reports according to AET policies and practices.
- Build and maintain effective networks and relationships with key internal collaborators.
- Serve as a visible role model within the team in maintaining high operational and HSSEQ (Health, Safety, Security, Environment, and Quality) standards.
Requirements
- Degree in a relevant engineering or science field.
- Over 3 years of professional engineering experience.
- Domain expertise in data center liquid cooling.
- Ability to work with some supervision on research and development testing projects, including data analysis and reporting.
Qualifications
- Masters degree or PhD in a relevant engineering or science field (desirable).
- Chartered membership of an industry-recognized engineering organization (desirable).
- Over 2 years of experience in a professional engineering testing environment (desirable).
- Over 2 years of experience in an operational engineering or safety-critical environment (desirable).
- Author of peer-reviewed published technical papers (desirable).
- Expertise in data analytics or specialist measurement techniques (desirable).
- Proficiency in Computer Aided Engineering tools (desirable).
- Knowledge and experience of immersion cooling of high-voltage (>30V AC, 60V DC) electrical systems (desirable).
- Knowledge and experience of data center technologies (desirable).
Schedule
This is a safety-critical operational role requiring on-site presence as needed to facilitate testing and team activities. Occasional remote work may be possible depending on team operations.
Up to 25% travel should be expected.
Pay
Base salary range: $135,000 – $145,000.
