Custodian (Water and Wastewater Services (WWS) Business Operations Division)
This position is with the Water and Wastewater Services (WWS) Business Operations Division, Facilities and Grounds Services Section.
About the role
Performs a variety of custodial and related maintenance duties in an assigned area or building. Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy machinery: perform advanced floor treatments utilizing specialty industrial equipment (e.g., scrubbers, burnishers, hot water extractors, pressure washers).
- Deep sanitation: execute heavy-duty cleaning and disinfection of high-traffic restrooms, locker rooms, building walls, and windows.
- High-altitude cleaning: clean building surfaces of varying heights and difficulties utilizing extension poles and aerial lifts.
- Daily commercial janitorial operations: perform routine facility cleaning including washing, sweeping, industrial mopping, vacuuming, dusting, collecting litter, and trash removal.
- Inspection and supply management: inspect areas for cleanliness, replenish supplies, and maintain an accurate inventory of specialized cleaning products and tools.
- Logistics & setup: move and arrange commercial furniture to prepare rooms for scheduled programs and corporate activities.
- Light facility care: perform basic custodial project work such as replacing dispensers and changing light bulbs.
- Ad-hoc tasks: perform related work and assist in emergency activities as assigned by operational leadership.
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and buffs floors; cleans walls, ceilings, and woodwork; washes windows.
- Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies.
- Dusts; empties waste baskets; changes light bulbs.
- Moves and sets up furniture; prepares rooms for scheduled programs and activities.
- Operates and cleans manual elevators.
- Cuts grass on adjoining lawns; collects litter and sweeps walks around public buildings.
- Cleans offices, break rooms, halls, stairways, and similar areas to provide a clean, sanitary, and safe environment.
- Performs a variety of light maintenance activities to maintain a safe, clean work environment and facilitate ongoing operations.
- Maintains inventory of cleaning products and supplies.
- May perform a variety of security-related duties in accordance with established security procedures.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Requirements
- Requires three (3) months in commercial cleaning, custodial work, and related maintenance work or closely related experience.
- Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.
- Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, and perform cleaning from an aerial lift.
- Must be able to use cell phone, tablet, and work order tracking software.
Preferences
- Associate, Bachelor, or Vocational Degree in a related field.
- License or Certification in Plumbing or Carpentry.
- Cleaning Management Institute (CMI) Certification or equivalent.
- Any of the following certifications:
- OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Certification (BPC)
- IJCSA Chemical Hazards Certification (CHC)
- IJCSA Carpet Cleaning Certification
- IJCSA Customer Service Certification (CSC)
- IJCSA Biohazard Cleaning Certification (BCC)
- IJCSA Mold Inspection & Remediation Services Certification (MIRS)
- CMI ISSA Advanced Custodial Technician Certification or equivalent.
- 1+ years of experience using Maximo, DataSplice, or similar maintenance management software.
- 1+ years of documented knowledge and work experience in one or more of the following areas: occupational exposure, chemical disinfection, biohazard precautions, and Personal Protective Equipment (purposes and types).
- 1+ years of documented custodial work experience in an industrial/commercial/plant setting.
- 1+ years of documented knowledge and work experience using janitorial services software CompuClean or similar software.
Schedule
The assigned shift will be Monday through Friday from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The assigned shift may change due to operational needs.

Physical Demands
Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of the fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Unavoidable Hazards
Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals and explosives; violence.
