About the role

The Department of Anesthesiology at VCU Health is dedicated to providing exceptional anesthetic and critical care services, conducting research, and training future anesthesiologists. The Critical Care Anesthesiologist position serves as a key provider of care to patients at VCU Health, including pre-anesthetic evaluations, intraoperative anesthetic care, postoperative rounds, resuscitation, intensive care, and therapeutic/diagnostic nerve blocks. They also lead the activities of nurse anesthetists as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Teaching: Provides clinical teaching to residents, medical students, student nurse anesthetists, and others. Participates in didactic teaching programs and attends conferences, rounds, and staff meetings as required.
• Research: Pursues clinical or laboratory research and scholarly interests within the guidelines of the Institution and Department. Participates in clinical trials based on interest and area of specialization.
• Service: Serves on various departmental, School of Medicine, University, or VCU Health System committees as requested or determined via individual interest.
• Clinical: Provides clinical anesthesiology care as directed by the Department Chair or delegate, including main operating rooms and ambulatory areas. Supervises and directs Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) as appropriate. Directs anesthesia care in other critical care areas of the medical center.

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree
• ABA Board eligible/certified in Anesthesiology and/or certified/eligible for Critical Care Certification
• Unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
• Eligible for employment in the United States
• Good communication, clinical, and teaching skills
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students
