Criminal Justice Specialist

CASES is seeking a licensed Criminal Justice Specialist (LMHC, MHC-LP, LMSW, LCSW) to join its Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) team in New York City. This role serves individuals with serious mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders, acting as a bridge between the criminal legal system and the FACT program.

About the role

The Criminal Justice Specialist will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing mobile, evidence-based treatment and support to help participants achieve recovery and stability in the community. Responsibilities include engaging clients, coordinating care during incarceration, and liaising with defense attorneys and courts to ensure comprehensive clinical and advocacy services.

This position requires in-person work in offices, courthouses, and the community. The team operates primarily in the field, with four days in the office for morning meetings and one remote day per week via Zoom.

Responsibilities

• Provide at least 80% of treatment contacts in the community, including leading groups when clinically indicated.
• Attend and participate in daily team meetings to discuss clients’ clinical and case management issues and needs.
• Complete documentation required by the NYS Office of Mental Health (OMH), NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), NYS Medicaid billing guidelines, and CASES ACT policies.
• Liaise with stakeholders involved in clients’ justice involvement (e.g., Correctional Health Services, defense attorneys, judges, court diversion programs) to advocate for client care.
• Collaborate with clients’ support networks and service providers on treatment planning, service coordination, and case management to promote recovery and stability.
• Provide clinical services that are anti-racist, gender-responsive, culturally humble, trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, client-centered, and evidence-based.
• Complete required documentation and toxicology tests for clients with active Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) orders.
• Provide 24-hour crisis intervention on-call services on a rotating basis.
• Deliver culturally competent services in accordance with CASES policies and practice.
• Be present in court, office, or field 5 days per week.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Team Leader.

Requirements

• Current New York State license as LMHC, MHC-LP, LMSW, or LCSW.
• Experience working with individuals with serious mental illness and/or co-occurring substance use disorders.
• Experience with evidence-based models for treatment of substance use and mental illness.
• Interest in, and sensitivity to, issues facing individuals involved in the criminal legal system.
• Highly organized, self-motivated, and a team player.
• Proficiency in computer skills.

Preferred Skills

• Bilingual (Spanish).

Pay

$65,000 per year.

Schedule

Full-time, Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (35 hours per week).
