About the role

The P CDC CREDIT Department of the P REVENUE MANAGEMENT Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has a Management vacancy for a Professional Supervisor. This role is responsible for leading, planning, and effectively managing credit & collections policies, procedures, and initiatives to align with corporate philosophy and strategic goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Companies regarding Credit Collection Policies and Procedures.
  • Coordinate and facilitate new programs and process improvements for Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric, and Hawaiian Electric Light (the “Companies”) to manage credit & collections and impacts to other areas, while balancing customer satisfaction.
  • Minimize and maintain the Company’s bad debt expense as set by the Company and Public Utilities Commission (“PUC”).
  • Develop, recommend, and institute policies & procedures for the collection of delinquent accounts and the reduction of arrears balances for the Companies.
  • Minimize revenue lag delays set by the Company and PUC.
  • Report and implement new Federal regulations.
  • Provide training and communication to managers and employees on evaluating information, exercising sound judgment, and determining compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and organizational standards.

Credit Section Operations

  • Lead, plan, and effectively manage the Credit Section.
  • Oversee all sectional personnel matters including performance management and improvement, staffing, employee recognition, development, and conduct.
  • Develop and maintain section operational procedures, standards, and guidelines.
  • Develop and coordinate training for employees on job procedures and task allocation.
  • Provide effective coaching, support, and guidance to build and maintain a high-performance, high-productivity, and high-morale team.
  • Develop and implement strategies and activities to increase productivity, efficiency, quality of service, and customer satisfaction.
  • Manage all commercial, residential, and government agency accounts with delinquent balances to ensure timely recovery.
  • Oversee credit and collections of non-commodity (or OCARs) billings.
  • Ensure quality customer service by providing all customers with the help and information requested.
  • Select and monitor collection agencies and vendors to ensure high dollar returns.
  • Manage the decision-making and processing of residential and commercial bankruptcies, including obtaining the best offer by the courts.
  • Coordinate large bankruptcy cases for the Companies.
  • Manage delinquent special needs customers within regulations set by the PUC and the disability act.
  • Handle escalations for other areas, including sensitive cases and PUC complaints.

Other Tasks

  • Determine present and forecasted operational needs for budgeting purposes, including bad debt write-offs.
  • Assist the Accounting Department with internal audits.
  • Ensure SOX reports are updated and ready for auditors.
  • Manage subpoenas and provide testimony, serving as a witness for the Company.
  • Manage legal issues and work closely with internal and external legal counsel.
  • Prepare consolidated company reporting.
  • Ensure monthly reports are accurate and processed timely.
  • Participate in Company emergency response activities as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the principles of accounting, finance, or management, typically acquired through a college-level degree or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as spreadsheets and word processing.
  • Working knowledge of credit and collection principles and law.
  • Working knowledge of the Company’s tariff, rate schedules, and collective bargaining agreement.
  • Working knowledge of SAP or equivalent company enterprise systems.
  • Working knowledge of budgeting and forecasting principles.

Skills

  • Advanced, effective written, listening, and oral communication skills.
  • Supervisory and leadership skills with the ability to achieve results, measure performance, build and maintain effective management and performance systems, and manage a high-performance team.
  • Valid State of Hawaii driver's license to make occasional trouble call trips and court appearances; must meet the standards in the Driver Safety Policy.
  • Demonstrated leadership and flexibility in interpersonal style, with the ability to work with a variety of individuals, frequently dealing with sensitive, difficult, or confrontational issues while using tact, courtesy, and discretion.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, negotiation, conceptual, and administrative skills to assess job demands, recommend proper actions, and handle multiple projects and programs.
  • Ability to analyze business financial statements and other credit reports.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3-5 years of related work experience in credit management or similar work experience in customer service, customer relations, credit operations, and/or accounting.
  • Minimum 3 years of educational or work experience with credit & collection laws or working with legal counsel.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience.

Pay

The hiring range for this position is $89,100.00 to $113,700.00. The selected candidate will be placed according to their skills and qualifications.
