About the role

The Sr. Portfolio Manager assists loan officers in managing the largest and most complex loans within UMB’s Commercial & Industrial portfolio. This role involves managing assigned credit portfolios, mitigating associated credit risk, and identifying opportunities for expansion while maintaining meaningful client relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with loan officers to administer and manage commercial banking relationships.
  • Perform credit underwriting for existing and prospective clients, including:
    • Detailed credit analysis to assess borrower/guarantor repayment capacity.
    • Loan structuring recommendations and preparation of credit packages for committee approval.
    • Collateral analysis across multiple asset classes and preparation of pricing/risk rating models.
  • Monitor borrowing base reports and covenant compliance, reporting exceptions to loan officers and credit monitoring teams.
  • Track documentation exceptions, past dues, field exams, borrowing base reports, and covenant exceptions.
  • Identify and manage early warning signs in the portfolio, including:
    • Analyzing borrower/guarantor financial performance (monthly, quarterly, or annually).
    • Confirming borrowing base and financial covenant compliance.
    • Reviewing payment performance benchmarks and conducting regular financial reviews.
  • Provide recurring customer service through joint sales calls, direct client correspondence, and project execution.
  • File required reports and resolve issues efficiently.
  • Mentor less experienced Portfolio Managers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of commercial banking experience, including credit underwriting.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • In-depth knowledge of loan processing, including maturing loans, renewals, restructuring, and approval processes.
  • Proficiency in interpreting policies, loan contracts, credit reports, financial statements, and loan documents.
  • Strong analytical and self-starter skills with the ability to mentor peers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with commercial lending software.

Preferred qualifications include 8+ years of commercial banking experience, prospecting/networking abilities, and product training.

Pay

Compensation range: $141,354 – $207,900. The posted range reflects UMB’s reasonable estimate for starting pay, which may vary by geographic location, experience, and other job-related factors.
