About the role

The Department of Sociology is seeking a well-rounded, service-oriented, and tech-savvy individual with good communication skills, creativity, and energy to support the launch and administration of the department's new Social Data Analytics Master of Science Program.

Responsibilities

  • Academic Advising (25%): Act as Academic Counselor for the department's full-time fee-based Social Data Analytics Master of Science Program. Counsel and assist students experiencing academic difficulty or personal crises regarding options and resources. Assess student needs, resolve academic concerns, evaluate and deal with complex situations, develop individualized academic plans, facilitate conflict resolution, and monitor student progress. Refer students as necessary to appropriate UW or community resources. Use data tools to analyze and assess student progress through the program. Interpret University and School policies and regulations to students, faculty, and staff.

  • Graduate Professional Placement (25%): Provide one-on-one advising to students and recent graduates on career exploration, job search strategies, and professional development. Maintain current knowledge of labor market trends relevant to the program. Connect graduates with suitable job openings, internships, and employer contacts. Assist graduates in identifying career pathways aligned with their degree. Review and coach students on CV/resume construction, cover letters, portfolios, and other application materials. Support students in translating academic, internship, and project-based experience into strong career narratives. Develop workshops and career readiness programming on topics such as job search strategies, interview skills, and workplace success.

  • Program Support (35%): Lead New Student Orientation for current admits. Participate in multi-year program planning with the Director of the program. Identify community organizations for partnerships on student capstone projects. Develop relationships with community partners to establish expectations around capstone projects. Match students with community partners for capstone projects and monitor relationships. Assist with the Sociology Department graduation ceremonies. Ensure that paper and electronic documents pertinent to the MS program (including brochures, web material, online forms, etc.) are kept up to date. Maintain familiarity with University, College of Arts & Sciences, and Continuum College policies. Respond to faculty/staff inquiries regarding the full-time MS program. Maintain advising database and program website. Curate and disseminate information about professional development opportunities for students. Prepare reports and insights to support accreditation, program evaluation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Recruitment (15%): Design and implement an outreach strategy to attract applicants using webinars, participation in recruitment events, and online advertising tools. Advise prospective students on pre-major course requirements to apply to the full-time MS and Certificate program and answer questions about the competitive admissions process. Coordinate annual recruitment for the MS and Certificate program. Assist in screening applicants and participate in admissions committee decisions. Advise and redirect students denied admission to the program. Respond to interested student inquiries via phone, email, and drop-in visitors.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree and 3 years of advising, student counseling or teaching experience, or equivalent experience/education. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Manager.

  • Additional Qualifications: Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize work, and manage heavy workloads with frequent interruptions. Ability to work effectively and patiently with diverse groups of students. Collaborative teammate with strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to communicate effectively. Excellent oral and written communication skills for professional workplace settings, including presentation and public speaking experience.

  • Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with University student related policies and procedures. Experience with University student database systems. Experience working in areas related to career counseling, and familiarity with career exploration and job search tools.
