About the role

The City of Cottonwood is seeking a Planner to perform professional planning work in the Planning and Economic Development Department. This position is responsible for current and long-range planning activities, including zoning, land use, development review, and community development projects.

Responsibilities

  • Review and process development applications, including site plans, subdivisions, rezoning, and variances.
  • Provide professional planning assistance to the public, developers, and other city departments.
  • Prepare and present reports and recommendations to the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of the city’s General Plan, zoning ordinances, and other planning documents.
  • Conduct research and analysis on planning issues, including land use, transportation, housing, and environmental concerns.
  • Coordinate with other city departments, agencies, and stakeholders on planning-related projects.
  • Respond to public inquiries and provide information on planning policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Perform field inspections to ensure compliance with zoning and land use regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of professional planning experience, preferably in a municipal setting.
  • Knowledge of planning principles, practices, and techniques, including zoning, land use, and development regulations.
  • Familiarity with Arizona planning laws and regulations is desirable.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, and legal documents.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and planning-related software (e.g., GIS, AutoCAD).
  • Ability to work effectively with the public, elected officials, and city staff.

Pay

$50,000 - $65,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
