Correctional LVN

About the Role

Employees in this classification perform a wide variety of patient care activities in an assigned correctional facility. They function within their legal scope of practice and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the organization and practice setting. Work is performed under the direction of a registered nurse as part of a total correctional managed health care team to provide safe and competent care to patients.

Responsibilities

• Reports data, identifies, and reports alterations in patient responses to assist in problem identification and goal formulation.
• Appropriately documents care provided and patient's response to care in an accurate and timely manner in patients' charts.
• Prepares and operates necessary equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments, and procedures, ensuring proper use and maintenance.
• Assists with or performs exams and procedures within the LVN scope of practice, documenting all activities clearly and concisely in patients' health records.
• Labels specimens taken during exams or procedures at the patient's bedside.
• Administers or assists with the administration of medications to patients, following clinical and compliance policies, and documents activities accurately in medication systems and health records.
• Assesses and triages patient care requests, documenting activities in the patient's health records in a timely manner.
• Performs nursing rounds as needed in all required areas, documenting any complaints and requesting additional healthcare needs as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the job classification.

Requirements

• Current Vocational Nurse License in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program of vocational nursing within 120 days of applying.
• Current CPR certification.
• Graduated from an approved, accredited nursing program.
• New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) on the first attempt.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with electronic health records.
• Ability to operate in a dynamic health facility under the direction of supervising nurses.
