Correctional LVN

About the Role

Employees in this classification perform a wide variety of patient care activities in an assigned correctional facility. They function within their legal scope of practice and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the organization and practice setting. Work is performed under the direction of a registered nurse as part of a total correctional managed health care team in providing safe and competent care to patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct nursing services to patients in the health facility following standards of care of the department.
  • Documents activities timely, concisely, and appropriately in patients’ health records.
  • Ensures clinical health equipment and technology is in good working order and maintains equipment according to departmental standards, including operational use and cleaning/sterilization protocols.
  • Immediately reports inoperable equipment per departmental standards.
  • Assists in exams and procedures within the RN scope of practice and documents all activities clearly and concisely in patients’ health records.
  • Labels specimens taken during exams or procedures at the patient's bedside.
  • Administers patient medications following clinical and compliance policies and procedures, documenting activities clearly and concisely in medication systems and patients’ health records.
  • Receives, documents, assesses, and responds to patient care requests according to policy and standards of the department.
  • Performs nursing rounds per department standards and documents any patient complaints in health records.
  • Requests additional healthcare needs as required.
  • Oversees the clinical practice of LVNs and other clinical personnel in the health facility.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the job classification.

Requirements

  • Current Vocational Nurse License in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program of vocational nursing within 120 days of applying for a position.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Graduated from an approved, accredited nursing program.
  • New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) on the first attempt.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 or more years of experience in nursing.
  • Acute care (Med/Surg, ICU, ER) nursing experience.
  • Previous experience working in a correctional environment.
