Credential of Competency
Pennsylvania requires all instructional assistants working with students in special education to have a minimum of 48 undergraduate credits or a Credential of Competency. The Credential of Competency for Special Education Paraeducators is a voluntary program that allows paraprofessionals to achieve qualified status as defined by state regulations.
When a district verifies a paraprofessional’s competence in each standard on the Competency Assessment Checklist, the checklist is submitted to the Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education. Upon approval, the paraprofessional receives a Credential of Competency.
