Controller Engagement Manager

RemoteRemoteAccountingPart-time

82i is building a new kind of finance firm designed to accelerate people into leadership roles. We work hands-on inside founder-led companies, helping them build reliable financial infrastructure, operate with discipline, and make better decisions. Our goal isn't just to deliver excellent client work — it's to develop our team into strong future finance leaders and operators.

About the role

As a Controller Engagement Manager at 82i, you're not just a senior accountant with a new title. You're the person founders and CEOs rely on to trust the numbers — and use them to build better businesses. You already have strong accounting and financial operations fundamentals. In this role, you'll expand into:

  • Leading client engagements end-to-end with full ownership of financial integrity
  • Bridging accounting operations and executive-level decision-making
  • Developing and managing consultants across multiple engagements
  • Building scalable financial infrastructure inside growth-stage companies
  • Developing judgment around priorities, risk, and organizational trust

Responsibilities

You'll be embedded inside growing, founder-led companies — owning the accounting and financial operations while serving as a strategic finance partner to leadership.

  • Lead month-end close: journal entries, reconciliations, financial statement prep
  • Own general ledger integrity and transaction accuracy across client companies
  • Manage AP, AR, payroll, and core accounting processes
  • Own cash flow visibility and support capital planning conversations
  • Ensure GAAP compliance and design scalable controls and documentation
  • Translate accounting data into clear, decision-ready insights for executive teams
  • Lead, develop, and support consultants across your engagements
  • Serve as the primary finance and accounting partner to founders and CEOs

Your job is not just to close the books. Your job is to ensure leadership can trust the numbers.

Requirements

This role is ideal for someone who:

  • Has 5–8 years of progressive accounting or financial operations experience
  • Has led month-end close, managed accounting teams, and worked directly with leadership
  • Is comfortable owning outcomes in fast-moving, often ambiguous environments
  • Prioritizes solving problems over waiting for perfect direction
  • Communicates clearly with both finance and non-finance stakeholders
  • Wants to grow beyond accounting into true finance leadership

Typical backgrounds: Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, or Assistant Controller at a growth-stage company or public accounting firm. CPA or CPA-track preferred.

Benefits

  • Growth is capability-based, not tenure-based
  • Exposure to multiple clients, industries, and systems
  • Remote-first with flexible schedules
  • Annual fully paid firm-wide team trip

A team that pushes you to be better — no drama, no politics, just growth.

About the company
