Control Room Operator - Combined Cycle

About the role

As a Control Room Operator, your primary responsibility is to successfully complete all required training objectives and develop the skills necessary for promotion to the Operations Specialist position. The Control Room Operator is involved in all aspects of operating a power generation facility. Depending on the facility, operating personnel may also perform maintenance-related functions in addition to operational duties. The scope and complexity of these maintenance responsibilities vary by facility.

Responsibilities

• Complete the OST curriculum and promote to the Operator Specialist classification.
• Learn facility-specific operation of coal, natural gas, and fuel oil fired steam generating units and steam turbine generators, simple cycle gas turbines and combined cycle units, conventional and pumped storage hydro units, internal combustion engine units, solar powered units, wind powered units and fuel cell powered units, and their related equipment.
• Operate and monitor equipment and auxiliaries by remote control from the control room as well as from throughout the facility using Distributed Control Systems, gauges, instruments, and communication facilities.
• Coordinate and maintain unit availability with AGC, including preparation and planning for load reductions/increases based on system demands.
• Operate units within environmental and SRP guidelines.
• Direct the work of other classifications and assist as directed by others in the completion of tasks.
• Train personnel in other classifications in the proper operation of plant equipment, controls, and procedures.
• Evaluate plant processes and issue clearances as needed; requires thorough knowledge of clearance procedures.
• Perform regular O&M duties at the site, including housing areas, civil works, roadways, water or sewer systems, etc.
• Shift work, non-continuous multi-shift, and overtime may be required.

Training Objective

Complete all training curriculum defined by the Operations Specialist Trainee program and all testing and job performance measures successfully. All training must be completed within two years from the date of promotion, subject to Plant Manager agreement. Skills training will vary based on business needs and may change to meet facility requirements. Mandatory Regulatory Training will be completed to comply with SRP policy.

Progressionary Training Objectives

• Successful completion of the OST curriculum.
• Upon completion, progression to the Operator Specialist classification is available without waiting for an opening at their current facility.
• Failure to complete the OST curriculum, testing, and job performance measures in the specified time may result in either an opportunity to bid to another position or a demotion to O&M 3 T/A Specialist position.

Requirements

• Experience as an O&M Specialist III, Operations or equivalent skills and knowledge.
• A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Valid Arizona driver’s license.
• Appropriate respirator medical certification, fit test, and training required.
• Physical Agility Test.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as a Combined Cycle power plant Control Room Operator.
• Experience with GE 7FA combustion turbines and GE D11 steam turbines.
• Experience with GE Mark VIe turbine control system and Foxboro balance of plant control system.
