Control Booth Operator

About the role

This position supports the daily operations of the agency under sworn supervision, playing a critical part in ensuring the security and efficiency of the Fairfax County Courthouse and Adult Detention Center (ADC). The role involves coordinating and facilitating the response of first responders to emergency situations, offering a challenging and rewarding career in public safety.

Responsibilities

• Monitors personnel, visitors, and inmates.
• Manages courtroom and security passage access and responds to calls via telephone and radio.
• Effectively communicates security incidents and shares information with sworn personnel.
• Operates a computer-aided dispatch console, controls, and radio frequencies in compliance with policies and standard operating procedures.
• Monitors facility security systems, cameras, and alarms to maintain a secure environment.
• Controls and verifies all access to secure areas through the Inet system and ID verification protocols.
• Coordinates communications between staff, public safety agencies, and emergency services via radio and other channels.
• Accesses and queries criminal databases (VCIN/NCIC) as needed.
• Inspects and reports on security equipment functionality.
• Provides professional customer service and approved information to public inquiries.
• Documents and relays critical information to appropriate personnel.
• Manages inventory and storage of controlled items.
• Enforces security protocols to prevent unauthorized access or escapes.

Note: This posting may fill multiple positions within the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office. Assignments may vary based on operational needs, requiring adherence to established protocols and procedures.

Requirements

• High school graduation or possession of a GED issued by a state department of education.
• Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) Operator Level B certification (required within 6 months).
• Must complete a criminal background check, polygraph exam, and psychological exam to the satisfaction of the employer.
• This position is designated as emergency/essential services personnel (required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the functional area to which assigned.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and County laws and ordinances affecting assigned duties.
• Knowledge of standard operating procedures and guidelines as well as riot, hostage, fire, and disaster plans.
• Knowledge of the agency's information technology systems (e.g., PCs).
• Ability to quickly assess the scope and magnitude of an emergency.
• Ability to operate emergency equipment, radio, and CAD systems.
• Ability to maintain a level of physical fitness appropriate to assignment.
• Ability to work a shift schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Ability to work effectively under stress.
• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with fellow staff members, inmates, and other departments and agencies.
• Ability to effectively handle situations requiring tact, diplomacy, fairness, and good judgment.
• Ability to make accurate observations and remember names, faces, and details.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency and experience operating a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
• Proficiency and experience operating a radio dispatch communication console.
• Previous experience dispatching public safety professionals to calls for service (e.g., law enforcement and/or fire & rescue).
• Proficiency and experience using criminal justice information databases (e.g., the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN)).
• Experience in corrections.
• Proficiency and experience operating a secure facility control and monitoring system.

Physical Requirements

• Job is generally sedentary in nature; however, visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor and Graphic User Interface.
• Must be able to operate mouse and keyboard-driven equipment.
• Must verbally communicate effectively with others.
• Requires the ability to hear and interpret auditory signals, such as alarms, emergency alerts, or verbal instructions in real time to ensure the safety of personnel and operations.

Schedule

The incumbent may be assigned to multiple types of shifts (shift hours are subject to change). Squad schedules are 12.5-hour shifts that work 15 days per month with workdays alternating weekly, equal to 87.5 hours per two-week pay period, to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

• Day shift: 6:30 am – 7:00 pm
• Night shift: 6:30 pm – 7:00 am
