Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Laboratory Supervisor
S&ME is seeking an individual to join our Construction Services team in either our Nashville, Tennessee, or Huntsville, Alabama, location as a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Laboratory Supervisor. We deliver innovative geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction material testing services for clients across transportation, energy, water, waste management, education, government, commercial, and industrial sectors.
About the Role
As the Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Laboratory Supervisor, you will manage lab personnel, oversee daily activities and projects, and ensure quality and safety in lab operations. This position balances team leadership, client relations, quality assurance, and operational efficiency. Initially, the role will include supporting both the Huntsville and Nashville laboratory operations.
- Oversee lab staff in testing, equipment maintenance, calibrations, and daily operations.
- Handle Construction Materials Testing projects, including proposal development, budgeting, scheduling, and report delivery.
- Manage staff schedules and collaborate with Field Supervisors and Project Managers on project progress.
- Train employees on lab processes and ensure they maintain necessary certifications.
Requirements
You have a minimum of 2 years of combined experience in geotechnical and construction materials testing and a supervisory, management, or leadership role. A Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering or other closely related technical fields is a plus but not required.
You are proficient in computer technology and mechanical testing equipment and hold active industry-related certifications, such as:
- American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Aggregate Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
- International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
- National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET): CMT-Soils; CMT-Concrete; CMT-Asphalt
You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of the position, including:
- Working primarily in the office but may be requested to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Walking on concrete/tile floors and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day.
- Lifting and carrying 40-50 lbs. of field/laboratory samples and equipment.
- Safely handling field tools and maneuvering equipment on active construction sites.
