S&ME is seeking an individual to join our Construction Services team in either our Nashville, Tennessee, or Huntsville, Alabama, location as a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Laboratory Supervisor. This role helps provide engineering solutions to clients across transportation, energy, water, waste management, education, government, commercial, and industrial sectors.

About the role

As the Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Laboratory Supervisor, you will manage lab personnel, oversee daily activities and projects, and ensure quality and safety in lab operations. Responsibilities include scheduling assignments, maintaining equipment, coordinating training and certifications, and supporting business development. This position balances team leadership, client relations, quality assurance, and operational efficiency. You will also contribute to the construction services and geotechnical team through field and project management roles. Initially, the role will support both the Huntsville and Nashville laboratory operations.

  • Oversee lab staff in testing, equipment maintenance, calibrations, and daily operations.
  • Handle Construction Materials Testing projects, including proposal development, budgeting, scheduling, and report delivery.
  • Manage staff schedules and collaborate with Field Supervisors and Project Managers on project progress.
  • Train employees on lab processes and ensure they maintain necessary certifications.

Requirements

You have a minimum of 2 years of combined experience in geotechnical and construction materials testing and a supervisory, management, or leadership role. Proficiency in computer technology and mechanical testing equipment is required. A Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering or other closely related technical fields is a plus but not required.

Active industry-related certifications may include:

  • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Aggregate Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
  • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
  • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET): CMT-Soils; CMT-Concrete; CMT-Asphalt

Physical demands

  • Work primarily in the office, with occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Walk on concrete/tile floors and stand for potentially up to 12 hours a day.
  • Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. of field/laboratory samples and equipment.
  • Safely handle field tools and maneuver equipment on active construction sites.
