Commissioning Engineer, AWS Commissioning

About the role

As a Data Center Commissioning Engineer (CxE), you will be part of a highly creative, efficient team tasked with tackling fascinating and challenging problems in building and supporting the operations of Amazon-owned data centers. The Amazon Commissioning team (ACx) understands, evaluates, defines, and manages construction quality expectations in accordance with engineering designs to meet customer requirements.

You will support vendors, contractors, and other teams involved in the construction and commissioning of various systems, including:

• Medium and low voltage power systems
• Generators
• UPS
• HVAC (Air Handlers / Exhaust Fans / VFD)
• Chilled Water Systems
• Building Management Systems (BMS)
• Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS)
• Testing and balancing
• Pumps and Hydronic systems

Responsibilities

The Commissioning Engineer (CxE) provides testing and validation oversight of AWS data center electrical and mechanical infrastructure. Key responsibilities include:

• Reviewing design documents, leading Factory Witness Testing (FWT), and managing third-party commissioning vendors in onsite pre-functional, functional, and integrated systems testing.
• Taking ownership of project successes by resolving technical issues and addressing schedule and coordination demands.
• Communicating lessons learned and collaborating on program improvements.
• Providing multi-discipline input into scheduling, test script development, designing, and planning of projects.
• Reviewing component submittal packages and performing system-level and integrated system testing.
• Auditing activities to ensure compliance with environmental, quality, and safety requirements.
• Providing comprehensive weekly reporting on the status of ongoing projects and lessons learned.
• Covering multiple in-flight projects with short timelines.

Requirements

• 3+ years of engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning of electrical and mechanical systems experience.
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or 3+ years of relevant discipline work experience.
• Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission-critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• 1+ years of field-level project support/execution.
• Ability to relocate to the Greater Columbus / Southwest Ohio area, within commuting distance of the Jeffersonville, OH campus.
• Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally for up to 40% of the year.
• Required to provide personal transportation for meetings and job visits away from the office (reimbursed).
• U.S. Citizenship.

Physical Requirements

• Walk job sites in uneven terrain.
• Work at heights and from ladders.
• Regularly walk, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Lift and/or move up to 49 pounds; participate in group lifts for 50 pounds or more.

• Work shifts longer than eight hours, including nights and weekends.
• Perform physical tasks throughout the day without becoming overly tired.
• Manipulate small wires and objects easily.
• Work in noisy, cold, or hot environments (outside a normal office setting).

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities.
• Experience with customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems in critical data center operations, including feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS units, PDU units, chillers, pumps, air handling units, and CRAC units.
• Experience developing and executing test procedures for mechanical or electrical systems/components based on design intent and approved equipment submittals.
• Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.

Pay

Base salary range: $96,600.00 - $160,000.00 USD annually (locations: Jeffersonville, Sidney, or Wilmington, OH). Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
